Long Version
I bought the light for an annual camping trip. I still love my Surefire (G2 LED) I reviewed last year, but I was looking for a light with more lighting options (ie; different levels of power). The Surefire alternative was about 2x more expensive and since I already own a very good quality light, I did not want to get something too expensive. I camp in a small camper and my goal was a low light for being inside it not to disturb my friend and a strong light for outside.
I came across the Fenix brand from doing some research. At first, being spoiled by Surefire's quality, I was nervous about picking up this light since it was made in China. I was worried that this light would be cheaply made given the price in comparison to the options/features. After reading other reviews that have been positive on Amazon and across the web, I decided to give it a try and I am glad that I did.
First thing to know is that this light is pretty small, but not to the point it is not easy to hold. The light is about the same size as 1 1/2 roll of US nickel coins and much lighter in weight. You can hold it in your mouth for a period of time if needed, like when I was getting wood for the fire. I also have big hands and found it to be easy to hold. I used to think my Surefire was small and light, but this flashlight is noticeably different. It so much lighter that I replaced the Surefire with this Fenix as the light I carry around with me (was in NYC during blackout, I always have a flashlight with me since then). Construction is top notch and that earlier fear was completely unfounded. This flashlight feels solid, with quality materials, and by no means feels cheaply made. Fenix clearly takes pride in their craftsmanship.
Operation takes a minute to understand when first getting this light. It involves 2 different areas of the light for different purposes. First off, the button in the back is a click on click off switch, which is really great than having to hold down the button on other lights. The second area is the output head (where bulb is) to turn it to full power by twisting to the left. To switch between output levels, you lightly tap the click button in the back. This is not a full depress until you hear a click. You just lightly tap it, which takes a little practice at first. Overall, this will give a low, medium, high and finally a strobe. The highest output is the twist of the output head and should be used sparingly.
From understanding how all this works, I really like the setup. However, when friends borrowed this light, they were using it in the lowest setting since they were unfamiliar with how to switch between the modes. Until I showed them what to do, they could not figure it out other than to go to the "turbo" mode which eats battery life. Therefore, I would not recommend this light as a general back up light for the family unless people understand and can remember how it works. Some people just does not care about all things technical and get frustrated easily.
The power of the light is really great for the size. Foolish me, I did not do a side by side comparison of my Surefire (never took it out since the Fenix did what I needed), but that is moot since they are different in total power output. Overall, I found this Fenix to have enough power for the situation. It may be a little low in maximum distance, but it is not intended to be a spot light. However, I did not feel that the maximum distance was lacking or too weak. Also, the light casts a wide medium distance view of even bright light, which mitigates the maximum distance to some degree. This is really nice since everything in front of you is illuminated and not a narrow beam as seen with many other flashlights. This is hard to describe, but it is nice to see much more around you in complete darkness than a narrow beam of light.
In summary, this is a great light for many uses. It is small, light and generally inexpensive considering the features and quality. I feel it had plenty of power for my camping trip in various situations and I am happy I bought it. Now it is in my backpack and I appreciate the small size and very low weight. I bought the lithium batteries and feel good that they will be good for up to 10 years. Just note that this flashlight does not come with batteries.
As noted above, I am not sure I would use this as a general back up light for a family, unless they can remember how all the features are used. This is not a light that someone can pick up without prior knowledge and go from low light to normal high light or strobe. Not likely at the very least. But as a personal light, this one is great.
