Sports reviews of Fenix L0D 5 Level High Performance Cree LED Flashlight

Customer Review: Not a Q5 but still good
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

I just bought this light now that the price came down. It's not quite a Q5 AAA, but the difference is negligible for my needs, & I got it cheaper. The difference in the specs between the Q4 & Q5 is no big deal when powered by only a single AAA cell. One doesn't see a big difference in brightness & efficiency until you power them with larger or more cells.

I also just got the Terralux 220 Lumen LED flashlight. It just made my LED upgraded maglites obsolete. I considered carrying it to work & trips when I need a really bright light, & keep my Arclight Premium on my keychain as always for my regular light & close up work.

But the L0D just arrived & changed everything.

It's not quite as bright as my 3-D cell maglite upgrade at 140 lumens, but at the high setting it's still pretty bright running alongside the maglite.

On the high setting, it ran for 65 minutes continuous before it got noticeably dimmer using a 900mah Tenergy rechargeable AAA. After that it dimmed fast & considerably in 15 minutes where it was no brighter than my Arclight Premium AAA after 80 minutes. After shutting it off & letting the cell rest for almost an hour, I found the light would run at full brightness for about another 15 minutes before it noticeably dimmed.

I find with almost all LED lights, the total battery runtime of rechargeables can be 25-50% longer than rated if it's not continuous, where the batteries get an hour or more rest in between long runs, or just isn't run long at all continuous.

The light did get warm running continuous, but not unusually so. The body was warmer than the head. The AAA cell working hard was getting warmer than the head, but not warm enough to damage the cell.

It blew away my 2xAA & 2xAAA Maglite LED upgrades (older upgrades) at 40 lumens on all but the lowest setting.

On the lowest setting it still was brighter than the Arclight P, & the Fenix E01 (which also just arrived). The beam was also better & whiter.

Low & medium is pulsed regulated (uses rapid pulses too fast to see to dim them). High is not pulsed. SOS & strobe also run on high.

The hole for a keychain is too small for most keychains. They do provide a ring that just barely fits the hole, so don't lose it. There's a notch in the base so the ring can slip into it to use it in candle mode, but will only fit the ring provided. I think it's ironic that this & their other small lights are mostly used as keychain lights & they make the hole for the ring so tiny that only their ring just barely fits it.

It's a little larger than the Archlight AAA due to the deeper reflector (which provides less & better light overspill), & the waste of space because of the flat sides on the body, that don't stop it from rolling away anyhow.

Archlight is considered the smallest metal LED AAA light around, & is almost indestructible.

The Fenix lights seem well built & solid. Will they hold up to time & abuse like the Arclight? Only time will tell. I just replaced the Arclight with this one on my keychain to carry it everywhere.

The E01 actually arrived first, a day before this one. For only 10 bucks, I can buy almost 5 of them for the price of 1 Arclight Premium. It was slightly brighter than the Arclight, & ran 10.5 hours before it dimmed noticeably instead of 8.5 hours with the Archlight, so considered putting it on my keychain. It also has an oval beam.

The L0D is way cooler, better light, beam, has more features, even if it does have a lower runtime on low, so it's on my keychain now. The Arclight is hanging on a nail above my nightstand for now.

Update 7/24/10: After 2 years on my keychain, it would randomly shut off by itself or cycle through the modes by itself. Sometimes it wouldn't go on at all without hitting it. Battery contacts & the inside of the flashlight are spotlessly clean. It's never been dropped, other than being plopped down on a counter or table with my keys. Jiggling it & turning on & off a lot made no difference. Clearly something went wrong in the head. I had to put my old, dimmer, but reliable Arclight P back on my keychain.

Description of Fenix L0D 5 Level High Performance Cree LED Flashlight

The Fenix L0D is extremely small, not much bigger than the AAA cell it uses. It has five modes: primary, low, maximum, strobe and SOS. These modes not only allow the user to select the best compromise between brightness and runtime for any given task, but they also help to aid in an emergency. The Fenix L0D uses just one common AAA battery, and, thanks to its compact size and lightweight build, it is perfect for Every Day Carry (EDC). Moreover, its solid reliability has been strictly tested and proven. Turn the head of the flashlight clockwise to turn on the flashlight. A counter-clockwise turn will then switch it off. To switch between output modes, turn the light on, then turn it off. Within 1.5 seconds after turning the light off, turn it on again and it will be switched to the next output mode. Repeat this process to continue switching through the modes. If the light is turned off for over 1.5 seconds, the regulative circuit will be reset and the light will default to its primary mode the next time it is turned on.
