There was a lot of hype about this film before it came out. I like the concept for the film but the actual film leaves a lot to be desired. I was expecting not necessarily a documentary based upon on World Champion Bodyboarder and pioneer of the sport, Mike Stewart -but certainly a clearer and sophisticated focus for this film. In the end you get a bizarre mix of ideas which quite honestly is crudely put together.The film starts off well enough-some beautiful underwater shots alongside images of waves breaking and images from on-board looking up at waves peeling- Mike Stewart looking like he is one with nature etc. but the slow-motion and repetetive imagery of the film gets tedious very quickly and never recovers. It then gets more and more bizarre as it continues. Combine this with intermittent images of pollution, the twin-towers, Osama Bin Laden, a uni-cyclist, a down hill skateboarder, a very repetetive mirrored wave with metallic colours and guys bull-riding-(which is likened to the ferocity of a heavy wave) it is enough to put most sane people off. At the start the film asks 'why do we surf?' And yet it never really answers this question- yes I get it to get away from the daily grind of media, of all that is ugly in the world, that being one with nature is why Stewart does what he does, but the presentation and realisation of these ideas is confusing and unsophisticated- and kind of condescending to the intellect.
DVD two is just all the film without as much editing plus some images from the director and some of his art which is not very good. (I'm an art teacher so I know what I'm saying). Sadly a potentially great concept for a film is lacking a real tangible direction and focus. One to avoid I'm afraid.
