This chess set has been around a long, long, time. I played chess with my brothers on those long roadtrip family vacations back in the 70's. When gas was cheap and the oldman liked to drive...
I just purchased this set for my son and this thing hasnt changed-but for the color of the case-in 30 years. It was a great item then and they stuck with it. I read all the reviews before I purchased this item, mostly because I couldnt believe they still made the thing. Usually anything that worked well in the past has been replaced by a far inferior product for the future, this is not the case. Ignore the petty complaints listed in other reviews this travel set is worth every penny.
My son, just turned 7, loves the fact that we can play until he is boared or frustrated, put the lid on it, and come back at anytime in the futre and the pieces havent moved, the game is still in play.
A good gift for anyone who loves chess.

This is a nice chess set for traveling, it has a cover and strong magnets but what i realized a couple hours after placing all the pieces was that when i removed them (the pieces) it left a mark that i think maybe comes from the adhesive of the magnets (makes the board look dirty), in the end i don't really mind since it i just my traveling set, but i would have loved to be warned . If you do happen to get this board i advise you to wipe the bottom of your pieces other wise every time you do get adhesive on your board when you wipe it off you risk bringing the chess board paint off along with the dirty areas (to be more specific the board itself is gold and the black squares are panted on when you take off the adhesive the black paint comes off with it and you get gold spots.). Either way this is a nice set, you can play and study on the go, just remember wipe the bottom of your new pieces if you get this!Customer Review: Very playable travel chess set.

There are trade-offs on everything. This chess set does not fit in your pocket. It doesn't have fancy carving, or inlay.
What it does do, however, it does well. The pieces stand on the chess board magnestically, and stay exactly where you put them. You put the lid on the box, and you can stop the game and then start it again. The pieces are small, but not so small that you can't tell a bishop from a knight. You can easily see which piece is which, without having to guess. The design is simple. I haven't thrown the chess set on a stone floor, so I don't know if it is the ultimate unbreakable, but it stands up to a lot of wear. It will travel nicely in a backpack, and the pieces don't move when you sling the backpack onto the floor. My son liked this one so much, I gave it to him, then bought myself another one.

The Carrom Magnetic Travel Chess Set has been used for years and was just replace because the first was lost. It's best feature is the ability to retain the position of the pieces of a game in progress undisturbed when the top of the case is closed for storage. The magnetic base of each piece holds firmly against the board and will prevent the pieces from moving under most situations, even when upside down. The size of the board and the pieces allows it to b packed easily and when used for a game, to be perfect at home, in the car or plane.
It will be usefull to color the tops of the black and white bishops with contrasting colors to make them more distinguishable from the pawns. I used a dab of fingernail polish.

Exceptional set for a travel board... biggest drawback is, as said above, the magnets slipping off the pieces. I took 20 minutes to superglue them on and they've been just fine since. The detail of the pieces is stellar and the durability of the case, as noted, AND the fact that the top half fits underneath the bottom is a plus too... my biggest complaint is the size of the squares in relation to the base of the pieces - way too small, yet there was plenty of room to make it a tad bigger... also a nice addition would be the algebraic notation on the sides as well... oh, did anybody mention that the white pieces are actually cream-colored? This is a nice looking, durable and the best travel set around without a doubt!
