I found the best offer for this chess board at the time I bought it (late November '08) at buy dot com, where with a discount (always easy to find discount and promotional codes via a web search) and a free shipping offer I paid pennies under $95 and no sales tax.
None of the photos of the board I'd seen online before buying it did it justice. It is a high quality piece of furniture. I hardly live in a mansion but I can easily picture this board in one. Drueke has a reputation for making high quality products and the 23 inch Grandmaster chess board more than lives up to it. I carefully inspected the board upon receiving it, and it arrived with nary a defect, and it appears to be so well made that I imagine it will easily outlast me (I'm 57) as long as it is treated with due care.
At present I have it set up on a card table in my bedroom where I use it for analysis. In the future I will set it up in my living room where I will use it to play chess loving guests, but given how beautiful and fine it is, I think I may have to get a table other than a card table to set it up and display it on. (My chess pieces are House of Staunton Marshall plastic pieces in black and natural color and exactly the right size for the Grandmaster's 2 1/4 inch playing squares. The pieces and board together are most impressive looking and quite handsome.)
When I run my fingertips over the playing squares (which are the same on the top and bottom of the board), I feel a single, perfectly smooth surface, even though the light and dark squares consist of separate pieces of wood. A remarkable job of craftsmanship.
If you are attracted to the looks of this board from photos and have never seen one "in the flesh" and you are considering buying one sight unseen as I did, I highly doubt you'll be disappointed and if you appreciate chess and beauty, I bet that like me you'll be extremely pleased with your purchase. An object of beauty to gaze at in awe that is also eminently practical, well worth whatever one might pay for it up to Drueke's (I understand that Drueke is pronounced drew-key) current suggested retail price of $139.
