Sports reviews of Deuter Kid Comfort 2 CarrierCustomer Review: Great carrier Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
We had a problem with an old Kelty Pathfinder and Kelty would have sent us a brand new 3.0 in its place - but reviews were not overwhelmingly positive on that compared to this. So we decided to check out the Deuter at REI which is where we got the Pathfinder - they were agreeable to replacing it and letting us pay the difference between the two. Both examples of AMAZING customer service. I wanted to stick with the Kelty brand because I was so impressed with that level of service - most companies will do anything possible to not honor a warranty and all. But in the end we just had to go with Deuter as it was more comfortable.
We have a 29 pound kid and a 36 pound kid. (expecting one more, otherwise wouldn't be buying a frame carrier at this stage!) Naturally, the heavier one was more agreeable to riding in this which on the one hand made us think, well if it feels good with HER in it, it will feel great with a smaller kid - but on the other hand added a certain extreme factor to trying this.
We found the Deuter seemed to have a roomier cockpit - the new Kelty cockpit seems a bit smaller than the old ones. Realistically, we probably wouldn't be using this carrier by the time the cockpit got too small anyway, but it's a consideration. The big baby fit in the Deuter better than the Kelty, though she did fit in both.
We LOVED the fact that the kid can get in and out of the Deuter cockpit easily on their own by opening the side panel. Now granted - the little baby didn't have any interest in this feature, and I have seen my big baby climb in to the Pathfinder on her own, so they CAN find a way in the Kelty. But she couldn't get back out, and this really added that element of independence toddlers love. (I do wonder, though, about little monkeys opening this side door while in use... hopefully this won't be a problem!)
The seat on the Deater looks more comfy for the kid - though the girls seemed OK either way.
The belt on the Deuter seems more substantially padded than on the Kelty. The new Kelty def. didn't seem as padded as the old one. I felt the Deuter shoulder straps were better padded, but my husband thought they seemed comparable.
The Deuter alone is lighter in weight than the FC 3.0 - by a little over a pound, which isn't a huge amount, but just picking the two up, you can feel it. Overall, the Deuter just felt better to us. My husband got the big baby in both the Deuter and the Kelty to compare, whereas I think I only got the big baby in the Kelty and the small baby in the Deuter, but still, if 29 pounds in a frame carrier feels pretty good while pregnant and unable to get the waist belt just right, that says something.
Some cons - the child restraint on the Kelty is easier to deal with, the auto-deploy kickstand on the Kelty is NICE but hopefully we will get used to its lack, I did feel like the girls' legs hang more comfortably in the Kelty but the girls didn't seem to mind, and the Kelty 3.0 comes with a sun shade, whereas this does not. I debated about this one - you can buy it seperately, but there's not really a GREAT way to store it. I don't know if I will buy it down the line or not. We had one with the Pathfinder and only ever used it once since it made my son angry. I feel like it is a nice perk to add to resale value, but not something you really need - I prefer just to hike under cover of trees to deal with sun.
So I LOVED my old Kelty. No complaints. Not crazy about the new Kelty line but so happy with the company I have to encourage people to try them out and see if they work for you. Very happy with customer service at REI, and we think we're very happy with the Deuter! (FWIW Deuter also has a lifetime warranty - whether or not they are as awesome about honoring it as Kelty, I can't say. Hopefully I won't ever know. Normally when you pay this much for a high end gear item, you never have a problem that isn't your fault!)
