Description of Creative Fitness Door Gym

The Door Gym stands head and shoulders above the competition. This versatile device can be set up in seconds on almost any door frame and lets you work out in the convenience of your own home or office. It latches on without screws, bolts or fasteners, so you won't leave holes in your door trim. A cantilever design uses your own body weight (up to 300 lbs.) to keep it in place. Door Gym is more than a simple pull-up, chin-up bar. It also has two protruding close-grip handles that let you work out with your palms facing each other, a good position for isolating the muscles in the center of your back that control posture. In addition, you can use Door Gym on the ground as a push-up bar and a sit-up spotter.

Customer Review: Great for what it's meant to do
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

This door gym is great for someone who needs a cheap and easy tool to do pull-ups with. What is important, however, is understanding how it works. If you're facing a door, red bar in the image loops up behind the door and sits on top of your door frame. This means you must have molding on that side of the door frame and about 2 inches of space above the molding. Of course, most doors will have this, but the door I originally intended to use this on had no space above its molding. The pads on the left and right of the bar rest against the door frame on the side you are facing. This gives a cantilevered effect so your weight is pressing against the door frame, and not pulling hard on the molding on the top. However if you want to switch to a reversed pull up with your hands facing you, you MUST face the other way or else your weight WILL pull down on the top molding. There are no instructions that say this, only a figure drawing very subtly suggesting it. Once you figure that out, this works fine. Hook it on the door, work out, take it off, no tools required. If there is any flaw in the quality of the workout, it is that by the nature of hanging it in a doorway, you have to do the pull-ups with your legs bent since the bar isn't that far off the ground. I'm 6'3" and it's a little awkward to do that, but it does lend itself well to solo assisted lifts (putting your feet on a chair for a pivot point, etc.). As long as you know this is how it works, it's a great product.

Customer Review: Best piece of workout equipment I've ever used
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

I started using this because my doctor scared the hell out of me by pointing out that people as thin as I am are normally in late-stage cancer treatment. So I decided my first goal was going to be getting up to at least 19 on the BMI chart. To do that, I needed to put on 12 pounds, and because I really have no desire to put on fat, my decision was to do it with muscle mass. Ordinarily, I would have started to lift weights, but I don't have a reliable spotter for bench work or squats, which are the traditionally fastest ways to put on mass. The Door Gym was the compromise for me. Using my own body weight for resistance, I assumed the worst I could do was tear a muscle, rather than crush my neck or destroy a couple of vertebrae.

This item has been fantastic! When I started a few weeks ago, I could manage one pull up on the neutral bars and zero traditional pull-ups (that's not at all unusual by the way: most people can't do a single pull-up). I've now gotten to the point where I do a couple of sets of 5 neutral-bar pull-ups, and can squeeze out a couple of traditional pull-ups, plus some narrow-handed chin-ups and pull-ups. That may not sound like a big deal to anyone who routinely throws around 50 pound dumbbells, but it's helped me add 7 pounds of muscle just by burning fuel fast enough to keep me hungry for 4 or 5 meals a day. I'm feeling better and stronger than I've felt in a very long time.

Customer Review: Excellent pull-up bar
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

Pros: Excellent quality, sturdy, very easy to remove from the door.
Cons: Assembly instructions are confusing. Leaves some marks on the back of the wall.

I like to do pull ups, but my wife doesn't like to see my gym equipment lying around. I needed something I could setup and take down easily. This takes ten seconds to hang or remove from my door frame. It couldn't be easier. The bar claims to be able to hold 300lbs. I cannot confirm that, but I'm 5'10" and 180lbs and I'd have no fear hanging from it upside down.

A couple very minor negatives I've run into after six-months of use. First, the assembly was more difficult than it should have been. There are only four screws and washers included, but it's difficult to tell which pair should be used where. To prevent the screws from loosening over time, it's very important to use the correct washers. If in doubt, there are some good instructions included in the reviews of this product on amazon.com. Second, the back of the bar left some small marks on the wall above the door frame. These are caused by carelessly dragging the bar while removing it, and not from the weight of the pull-ups. The marks are minor scuffs to the paint, not damage to the wall or frame.

If you are looking for a space-saving, easy to remove, durable pull-up bar, I would highly recommend the Creative Fitness Door Gym.

Customer Review: You HAVE to do Pull-Ups if you want to be strong, sexy, and stable
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

Pull-Ups are a MUST to a strong, sexy, and stable body. They are the best exercises for your upper body strength, especially your back, lats, and biceps.

There are so many variations of pull-ups you can do, from chin ups to pull-ups, from narrow grip to wide grip, and from middle to side.

If you live near a park, just use those natural hanging surfaces to do your pull-ups. If you don't have access to anything sturdy that you can hang onto, then invest in a pull-up bar.

Go to a fitness store and test out the different brands of pull-ups. See which one works for you, and buy that one.

If you don't feel the burn after 10 repetitions, you are doing the exercise wrong. In all exercises, it is the eccentric portion of the exercise that builds muscle. Do the exercise in a smooth, controlled fashion with a 3 concentric and 6 eccentric count. Squeeze at the peak of the motion to get that extra pump.

As in all exercises, make sure to keep your wrists straight and check your posture with these seven vital points: feet hips-width apart and pointed straight ahead; knees slightly bent; pelvis at perfect middle, as if you are sitting at a bar stool; stomach tight, but not flexed; chest straight and aligned on top of ribs; shoulders parallel to ribs; and neck straight on top of body.

Customer Review: As quick and easy as the reviews say
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

I bought this to start a good exercise program requiring pull ups, the P90X system. The door gym is easy to set up (although the mini diagram for putting the screws/washers in place isn't very explanatory, but I still did it right the first time). My doors are awkward sizing (on the small side with not the strongest frame) and it still does just great. I have the opposite problem of many. The door gym is plenty wide for my door, but I don't have many doors in the house with the extra few inches on either side. Fortunately it hangs in the bathroom door just fine. The only disadvantage is my 6'3 husband is on his knees on the floor when reaching to it. However, it doesn't limit him doing push ups on it. I'm 5'3, so of course I have no problems standing full height. :) It had no problem supporting either of us and is very sturdy on the frame. I considered buying the Everlast, but too many reviews had little good to say about that one and sooooo many good reviews were out there about the door gym. It cost ten dollars more to buy this one, but it was worth the assurance of all these other good reviews that I was buying something decent.
