I have owned two of the Coleman battery powered lanterns. After a season the battery powered lanterns do not run as long as they used to. I bought the propane lantern to try it out. It is great because it runs for hours (greater than 5 depending on the light setting) on one propane bottle which can run about $3.00 max. For cost of D batteries needed for my old lanterns the propane is cheaper.
The propane lantern has a adjustable light setting. When turned to the highest setting it is extremely bright. The battery powered lantern's highest setting is close to the propane's mid setting.
The last perk is that the bugs that are attracted by the light are killed by the heat and the flame of the propane torch. You do need to dump the bug bodies out of the lantern before packing it away. We kept the lantern about 8 feet away from us which gave us plenty of light. We did not see many bugs because they were killed almost instantly.
Cons: 1. Hiss noise from propane- but it becomes white noise after a half hour.
2. You cannot take it in your tent because it burns oxygen and could start a fire.
Overall, you cannot go wrong buying this propane lantern. It will last longer, be brighter, and cost less than the battery powered lanterns.
