The Coleman tent kit comes with everything you need to set up and break down your tent. The kit starts with four sturdy 10-inch steel tent stakes, which keep your tent from blowing away in the middle of the night. The solid rubber mallet, meanwhile, makes it easy to pound the stakes into the ground, so you don't have to search fruitlessly for a nearby rock. When it's time to pack up, you can turn to the easy-to-use tent stake puller, which keeps your fingers from cramping up. And no one wants to bring the campsite home, which is why the kit includes a handy whisk broom/dust pan combo for cleaning the tent floor. A must-have for frequent campers, the tent comes with a handy mesh storage bag. About Coleman The Coleman Company has been creating and innovating products for recreational outdoor use since W.C. Coleman started selling gasoline-powered lanterns in 1900. Inventor of the hugely popular fold-up camp stove, Coleman developed a plastic liner for his galvanized steel coolers in 1957--the birth of the modern cooler--and the company has been improving their utility and design ever since. The array of products that bear the Coleman name now includes just about everything you might need to work or play outdoors, from tents and sleeping bags to boats, backpacks, and furniture.
Sports reviews of Coleman Tent KitCustomer Review: Nice kit except for one problem Sport shop rating: 4 Stars
I bought this kit for my husband after our first camping trip and my husband 1) forgot to bring a mallet and broom and dustpan and 2) the stakes that came with our tent all bent the first time we tried to hammer them in.
It's nice to get it all in one little sack so we don't forget anything. I have since decided a large broom and battery operated hand vac suits my taste better than a little broom and dustpan, but those are still handy to have around.
The stakes in this kit are sturdier than the ones that came with our tent (i.e., they don't bend easily). The mallet works and we have no problem with it.
The stake puller works, but only if the stakes aren't stuck in the ground. The last time we used it, the stakes wouldn't come out and we were afraid plastic heads on the stakes would come off with the stake puller. It would be nice if either the stake heads weren't made of plastic or the stake puller would grip stake body so we could get a grip on the stake and pull.
Other than the problem with removing the stakes, I have no complaints.
Customer Review: Nice little kit Sport shop rating: 4 Stars
Handy little kit to have for camping. The stakes are quite nice and really saved us when our cheap stakes couldn't hold down the tent. The tent puller also is a time saver. My only complaint is that the bag is simply too small. I couldn't get the brush/pan out without tearing up the small bag. Otherwise it is a handy addition. I'll use the bag for more stakes that I'll be buying.
Edit: June 23,2007. I'm starting to question the rubber hammer. We tented in a very rocky area and the rubber hammer worked, but a heavy duty steel hammer is really the best choice. I won't tent again without a high quality hammer. Still, the stakes are excellent.
Customer Review: You'll get the Basics . Sport shop rating: 4 Stars
This tent kit has the basics. The stakes and the mallet are sturdy, and the stakes come with rubber tips to keep them from doing any damage when they're not in use. The stake puller is ergonomically shaped, and will work well in sandy areas. If the stakes are really stuck, it will pull out of shape. The whisk broom and dust pan are a nice addition, however they're hard to get back in the mesh bag because the strands of the broom get caught in the mesh. I agree with Mike's suggestion in his review- keep the plastic bag they come in because that will make the process much easier.
Customer Review: worthwhile tent accessory Sport shop rating: 4 Stars
A worthwhile tent accessory that doesn't take up a lot of space or add a lot of weight to your bag. The mallet is on the heavy side but does the job; the stakes worked well enough, but the stake remover is on the cheap end for quality purposes (it bends a little too easily); the broom and dustpan help in a pinch, but the mesh bag is on the small side and kinda cheap. Overall, if the price is right (i.e. on sale) it's worth the purchase and it'll make the camping experience a little easier too.
Customer Review: Great impulse buy! Sport shop rating: 4 Stars
I did not set out to buy this kit, I just needed one more item to get Free Shipping. I AM SO GLAD I BOUGHT IT!!! I go camping at least once a year, and it's usually rainy, windy, and muddy for at least one to two of the 4 days. The extra stakes turned out to be a necessity, and the mallet pleases my aging bones. While I still haven't used the broom, IT WAS REALLY HELPFUL TO HAVE THE STAKE PULLER. For a price of under $20 it was a perfect impulse buy!
