Description of Coleman Rugged Battery Powered Lantern (Family Size)

Lantern, 8D Double U-Tube Rugged
Light up your campsite with instant, long-lasting illumination with the Coleman rugged battery-powered lantern. The family-size lantern boasts a 13-watt fluorescent twin U-tube bulb that delivers a bright white light, along with a heavy-duty thermoplastic and rubber housing that holds up to heavy use. More significantly, the lantern will keep your tent well lit for hours, with a runtime of up to 28 hours on the low setting and 18 hours on the high setting (the lantern runs on eight D batteries, sold separately). And should the bulb eventually burn out, you can replace it in seconds thanks to the lantern's quick-release system. Other details include a comfortable handle grip, an easy three-position switch (off, low, and high), a weather- and shatter-resistant exterior, and a nonslip rubberized grip. The lantern--which runs cool thanks to the cool-touch bulb design--measures 9 inches in diameter and 15.25 inches tall and weighs 3.26 pounds without the batteries.

About Coleman
The Coleman Company has been creating and innovating products for recreational outdoor use since W.C. Coleman started selling gasoline-powered lanterns in 1900. Inventor of the hugely popular fold-up camp stove, Coleman developed a plastic liner for his galvanized steel coolers in 1957--the birth of the modern cooler--and the company has been improving their utility and design ever since. The array of products that bear the Coleman name now includes just about everything you might need to work or play outdoors, from tents and sleeping bags to boats, backpacks, and furniture.

Sports reviews of Coleman Rugged Battery Powered Lantern (Family Size)

Customer Review: Coleman is reliable
Sport shop rating: 4 Stars

This item was delivered just in the nick of time -- we had an unexpected big storm days after we got the second lantern by UPS. Power was out for only about 6 hours but it enabled us to read and make dinner on our propane stove, made us feel very comfortable. Everything functions well. I'm waiting to see how long the batteries work (we didn't have to push the lantern to its limit). The only complaint I might have in the future is that we need to keep so many large batteries on hand.

Customer Review: Dependable but not ultra-bright
Sport shop rating: 4 Stars

I received one of these lanterns as a gift a few years ago and have found it to be handy and dependable both for camping and for when the electricity goes off. So I gave one as a gift this year. I like the battery type because you don't have any fire and there are no mantles to break. It is better than rechargable because you can replace batteries immediately. However this is not as bright as a propane lantern. Ruth

Customer Review: Not as durable
Sport shop rating: 4 Stars

I had a Coleman lantern from years ago and unfortunately it died. I replaced it with this one. You know what they say, "they don't make 'em like they used to." It's in no way "fragile" by any meals. But, when camping I tend to throw things around and be a lot more rough on items. I have to baby this one a lot more.

It stays lit for quite a while and gives off decent light. No complaints there!

Customer Review: works for me
Sport shop rating: 4 Stars

This was actually the third one I have bought. I had two in my house. We recently had a severe ice storm in Kentucky. I used one for myself and one for my disabled wife in another part of the house. The one I bought was for a neighbor who did not have power for five days. The lantern is reliable, provides good light, and has remarkably long endurance.

Customer Review: a good lantern
Sport shop rating: 4 Stars

The lantern is very sturdy and provides a bright white light that shines up to 20 feet if you hold it correctly. It is rugged and sturday. It fell from about 4 or 5 feet onto the ground a few times without breaking and kept shinning. The one minor problem with this is the batteries only last about 12 hours, so stock up on D batteries.
