Sports reviews of Coleman Red Canyon 17-Foot by 10-Foot 8-Person Modified Dome Tent

Customer Review: Great Tent, worth the money.
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

Bought this tent just before a July camping trip to Cape Cod. I didn't even open it until I got to the campground. Being familiar with Coleman dome tents, set up was quick. Took less than twenty minutes with two people. This tent is huge. We set up two queen sized air mattresses at either end and still had room for two camp chairs and all our baggage in the middle (wife didn't pack lightly either). We got rain the first night and the tent stayed completely dry. It was very windy the second night and the tent was perfect then too.

One thing we did notice is that with the rain fly on, the tent captured and held the heat. It was hot and humid for most of the trip and it was extremely hot inside the tent during the day (even with all the windows open). We unhooked the rainfly on both sides and folded it up to expose the tent and it cooled down somewhat. Still it was in the high 80's and sunny most of our trip so I expected it to be warm inside. I might purchase a couple battery operated fans for the future just in case.

Overall, this tent was perfect for Me, my wife and 2yo daughter. This tent is big enough to be our family tent even if we add to our 3 person family. It worked well in the rain and setup was a breeze. You can't do better for the price (paid $108 in mid July 2010).

Customer Review: Room enough for three queen beds and then some
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

TWENTY FIVE MINUTES BY MYSELF: From the time I unrolled the tarp (which was a separate purchase) to the time I finished securing the rainfly. And that was taking my time. I'm a 5'8" person. I let the wind help me with the rainfly. Secure one side, and work towards the direction of the wind. I am not a camper. This is only the second tent I have set up. But am trying to help my son have a successful cubscouting year even with my hubby being deployed. I got this tent because our first family tent my hubby snapped one of the poles and the replacement costs a fifth of this one. Besides a 15.5 x 12 feet dome tent seems awfully small for two adults and four kids. I had little space to sleep in the only time all 6 of us went camping in it and that was a little over a year ago. THIS tent is VERY roomy. You could put three queen size inflatable beds and still have space. Coleman rates this an 8-person tent. I think that is stretching it. I don't know how 8 adults can comfortably fit in this. 6 would but 8 would be a tight fit. Whatever happened to elbow room :). Anyway, this is the best bang for the buck if you want my honest, novice opinion.

Customer Review: Terrific Family Camping Tent
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

This enormous tent is great for summertime campground camping. It's spacious and tall. Setup is very easy. The instructions are clear and well-illustrated, and I like that they are printed on waterproof, fabric-like material that's sewn to the carrying bag.

Setup is easiest with two people. The poles assemble easily. The hardest part, getting the rain fly over the top, is easy if two people hold the ends and "walk" it over - I had no trouble doing this with my 9 year-old daughter. Without the rain fly the tent is mostly screen at the top and provides no privacy.

The material is very thin. But this is expected at this low price point. Although you can buy a more expensive tent, this tent provides excellent value. Coleman made the right compromises in providing a value-priced tent; this isn't a cheap tent that will fall apart; the seams are strong, it is built well, it just doesn't use the top of the line materials found in $[...] tents. I'm happy with the purchase and looking forward to getting a lot of use out of it.

Customer Review: Great Tent For The Money
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

We just got back from our camping trip and have to give this tent 5 stars! When we had first received the tent, we set it up in the backyard as practice and felt the directions were a little confusing, but did manage to get the then up reasonably fast. When we go to the campsite, initially it was just myself and my son and because we had practiced putting it up, it took no more then 15 minutes to have it up and ready for use.

Within a few hours of putting the tent up, it began to rain and I mean it poured for a few hours. During this time the inside of the tent remained dry. By bedtime it had begun to rain and it rained most of the night. We woke up to a dry tent! We were so impressed and excited how well it held up to all the rain we encountered.

The only thing I don't agree with is sleeping 8 people, however we had four of us in the tent with some room to spare. This included 2 twin air mattresses and 1 queen size mattress.

To make a long story short, I would highly recommend this great tent!

Customer Review: Great Tent for the Money!!
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

We needed a tent for our first cub scout overnight campout. After much research, I decided on the Red Canyon because of size, features, reputation of Coleman, and price. I was not disappointed! This being my first ever tent, I was worried about putting the tent up. Well, it was very easy to do, with the help of 1 other person. Set up took about 15 min. - not too bad, I thought. Well, of course that evening we had a lovely thunderstorm, and although I was worried about rain getting in, NONE did, and no, I did not spray the seams. We were totally dry, unlike a few of our other camping friends. This tent is very roomy. I had a full size, and a twin size air mattress, 2 camp chairs, and all our gear, and there was plenty of room. I also love the two little accessory pockets - 1 at each end. They were great for cell phone, keys, etc. My only complaint is in the rainfly; there is a small tear in it, which I will tape. Other than that, I feel it is a great tent for the money (we paid $108). I hope to use it for many years to come!
