Sports reviews of Coleman Red Canyon 17-Foot by 10-Foot 8-Person Modified Dome TentCustomer Review: 2 day trip with no problems, and it rained! Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
Our 6 person family took this tent for a 2 night camping trip. Prior to the trip there was a practice set up session, and everything was easily set up in half an hour. At this time, the seams below the rain fly on the tent were water proofed, along with the seams on the fly itself.
Finding a camp space with a level 17 foot pad was the most difficult part of the whole operation. This baby is big! The whole family had plenty of room, plus room for packs and shoes and a cot, etc. It is easily tall enough for average sized folks to stand in, and the little interior side curtains allow the women folk to change without embarrassment. The side curtains only come up about 5 feet, but they are functional and easy to put up and take down.
The second night out, a major thunderstorm rolled through. It was one of those storms that floods low lying areas, snaps tree branches, and knocks out power. The winds got up a bit (20+ mph on us). I can't say anything happened aside form the sides flapping a bit, but the wind just wasn't that bad.
The rain, well that was the heaviest rain I have seen in a few years. It dumped on us for a good hour, before I noticed a couple of drips in the corner seams. In the morning I found a couple of 3 to 4 inch puddles in those corners. I was amazed! We had an inch and a half or more of rain come down (sometimes at severe angles) and the tent stayed almost perfectly dry! No wet gear or bags, no cranky and wet kids, no funny wet-tent smell! I believe that another coat of sealer will fix the corners, but frankly, I'm not too worried.
A few notes on this tent:
It will fit in the bag if you take care folding it.
My camp neighbor had the same exact tent which has served him well for 4 years - he stayed dry too!
This is not a winter tent. Even in a moderate breeze, lots of air flows through. Plus, the ginormous size of the thing keeps it from warming up at night from body heat.
The instructions say to unzip the door prior to set up. This allows you to pull the tent too tight, making it difficult to zip the door - and you don't want a broken door zipper while camping!
All in all, this has got to be the best bang for the buck family tent out there!
Customer Review: Huge Tent! Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
If you camp at campsites and don't like being cramped in a small tent, this is the tent for you! The price is better than I have seen others that were much smaller (when I bought it) and the quality is amazing. It rained while me and my buddy were out and there were no leaks at all. Another couple of friends were at the campsite next to us and bought a cheaper and much smaller tent from walmart. It leaked the whole night and they did not sleep well because they had to keep soaking up the rain and wringing it out. I did not put a tarp down below the tent since I read that the newer tents did not require it. There was no condensation from the ground into the tent.
I brought a queen sized air mattress extra deep mattress and would have had no problem if my buddy brought the same thing. If he would have done that, we would have had an extra 4-5 feet on the ends of the tent and 3-4 feet between our mattresses. He underestimated the magnitude of the tent and merely brought a sleeping bag which I laughed at the whole weekend. I think it says that it fits 8 people and I would say it could fit 7 grown men fine.
It is possible to set the tent up by yourself but it'll take a little longer that way. I'd recommend setting it up once before going camping just so you have an idea of how everything fits together. Instructions are quite poor but it's a tent so it's not difficult. Spread the tent out and stake it down, the 2 long poles are for the middle, 2 medium poles are for the ends of the tent, 2 smaller poles are for the front and back of the tent. The fly goes on after all that and you stake it down.
Summary:
Large
Handles rain and wind
No tarp needed
Price was great
Customer Review: The BEST Tent EVER! Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
I was pleasantly surprised when I found this tent for $99.99 on Amazon.com. I had paid the same price for another Coleman tent for (5 persons), so I was happy to have a little more room for the same price.
We just came off of a camping weekend with this tent. I had read the reviews of all the tents, and everyone said to seal the tent before you use it - which of course we didn't do and guess what --we were fine!
We had to set up this tent in the rain and I must say that this is the easiest tent ever to assemble! For the short time that we had the tent in assembly and without the rain fly out we had minimal water get through the screen at the top of the tent. There was absolutely no leaking in the bottom or from the sides by the seams.
The tent is very spacious. We had 2 queen size air beds on opposite ends and there was still enough room in the middle to fit another one. At one point we also used the dividers, but opted for the most part not to use them at all--it was just fine without them.
I love that this tent has small compartments at each end, so it was a nice compact place to keep things like keys and cellphones. There's also a compact area for putting things above your head at the highest point of the tent. Sometimes I kept one of my flashlights there for easy grabbing in the middle of the night. This tent also has access for a small pet which I thought was cute.
This tent is just absolutely amazing and I would HIGHLY recommend!
Customer Review: Exactly what I expected Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
I wanted a tent that I could take to state and national parks, one that would hold up under a rainstorm, one that is easy to set up, and one that would be tall enough to stand up in to change. (I hate changing while laying or sitting down) This tent more than did all of that. I took it to Itasca state park for 5 days and 4 nights. I had done a practice set up beforehand so I would know how to do it, and even still it took us about 20 minutes to do. If I was doing it with someone who knew how tents work, it could have been a lot faster. Make sure to pay very close attention to how it unfolds, if you do it wrong, it can end up not fitting. While there we had sun, clouds, and a full night of rain. It held up great. Nothing inside the tent got wet, and we actually forgot to zip up the windows, but the rainfly actually didn't let any water in that we found. It was more than spacious enough to walk around in, and it held both queen size air mattresses with a very generous space in the middle to walk/change/stand. Our campsite was very well surrounded with trees so there was almost no wind so I can't say how well it would work in windy conditions.
Pros
Huge, dry, easy to set up(once you figure out the directions), easy to take down, fantastic for a family or friend get together
Cons
The diagrams for setting it up are confusing
Summery: For the price, size, quality, and what I used it for; it was great.
Customer Review: Wonderful Family Tent. Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
Bought this tent for a family camping trip. We leave Friday, August 13th.
Setup tent in backyard to spray with water repelant and seal the seams.
Tent setup was fast and easy. Very roomy. Would recommend this tent to
anyone who needs a larger family size tent.
Will update review after our trip.
UPDATE - 8/18/10
Tent surpassed what we expected. We had some rain Friday night and Saturday night.
Nothing heavy. We all stayed dry. Had two adults and 2 kids(8 yrs and 10 yrs old). They used
the side rooms and had no problems. During the day pulled dividers up and out of the way.
I loved the cargo net to put on the top. And the attached clothes line inside is great.
I would recommend a fan to keep the air moving. When the sun beats on the tent it does get a
little warm in it. Fans keep it cool.
Take down of the tent was super easy and getting back into bag was not an issue.
Make sure you slowly squeeze all the air out slowly before you roll it up. This will make it
easier to get into bag. All in all, We will be using this tent for many years to come.
We will be getting our kids their own tent which will make this an even better tent. For 2 people
this tent is great. Plenty of room to move around and being able to stand in the tent is great.
