Sports reviews of Coleman Red Canyon 17-Foot by 10-Foot 8-Person Modified Dome TentCustomer Review: Coleman Is The Best In Its Category Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
This is my third purchase of Coleman Red Canyon 17-Foot by 10-Foot 8-Person tent. That statement alone speaks volumes. My first tent was bought 8 years ago and the door zipper finally broke, but only because another user was not careful when zippering it close. I fixed it by hand sewing Velcro along both edges of the door. Eight years of use and that was the only problem I had so I did not want to place in the "tent cemetery." My second tent was a gift to my son, but he stores it in my camping shed and have I used it for family camping trips. During this year's opening camping season on Memorial Day weekend, we will have three identical tents set up near each other!
I have put up this 8-person tent myself; it will take longer but it is possible. The end windows could be a factor when the weather is wet and windy, but I find that if I use the guidelines correctly, or better yet, if I string a large tarp above the tent, the breeze flowing through the end windows are welcomed. Where there are no trees to string the rope and the tarp, I bring along good sturdy old tent poles and use these, along with common sense and a bit of Scouts' know-how. The Internet has lots of sites where you can find suggestions on how to string your tarp when there are no trees. I have been camping when it was raining 24/7 and nothing in my tent got wet. And it was a breeze breaking down my tent with the top tarp or canopy above the tent keeping it dry. I suggest that you spend a little more money for 3 good strong and thick tarps, along with extra rope and tent stakes. Many times, I've found that I was the only camper who slept dry; never found a drop of water in the tent during a rainstorm; and was able to break down and fold a dry tent. Hint: to remember how the tent should be folded, take pictures during this time with your digital camera and store for later use. If you do that, you won't have a problem putting the tent back into the storage bag.
It is a must to place a strong, thick tarp under the tent before you set it up and, if you are using a sleeping cot or placing a heavy item within the tent, you should use another tarp inside the tent where the heavy item will be placed. I have a deluxe sleeping cot (from one of your competitors) accommodating a person up to 600 lbs, and 6 foot by 6 inches. Thank goodness I am neither but this is my style of "luxury" camping. Good housekeeping of your tent will stretch the years of your investment, along with keeping the smokers out of the tent. The only downside is the poor quality of the storage bag. The seams will rip after nominal use. But I end up purchasing a strong canvas bag (from one of your competitors) to store the tent.
