About Coleman The Coleman Company has been creating and innovating products for recreational outdoor use since W.C. Coleman started selling gasoline-powered lanterns in 1900. Inventor of the hugely popular fold-up camp stove, Coleman developed a plastic liner for his galvanized steel coolers in 1957--the birth of the modern cooler--and the company has been improving their utility and design ever since. The array of products that bear the Coleman name now includes just about everything you might need to work or play outdoors, from tents and sleeping bags to boats, backpacks, and furniture.
Sports reviews of Coleman Hot Water-On-Demand Portable Water HeaterCustomer Review: Coleman Hot Water on Demand Sport shop rating: 4 Stars
I like the machine. The battery should be freshly charged before you go camping as it only holds a 40 minute charge. The plastic water container is OK but not ideal as it gets wiggly and is tough to keep in place during use. I put my plastic water container into a supporting rigid plastic milk crate. Also found I had to turn the opening upright between uses so that it would not leak. Then turn it back on its side for use. I wish it had a rigid five gallon container that had a better seal on it.
Customer Review: Works great once you get the leaks out Sport shop rating: 4 Stars
I had a lot of trouble getting the hose adapter to stop imitating a garden sprayer. I took the brass fitting off, put some teflon tape on the threads, re-installed it and added another hose washer, now it works much better. Coleman needs a licensed plumber on their design staff. The heater will not start while the battery is being charged, Coleman's rechargeable lanterns display this similar design flaw.
Customer Review: Worked OK for three years; but failed after that. See followup review Sport shop rating: 3 Stars
Like a Coleman adjustable electric electric lantern I had to trash two years ago, this product has a very limited life and no product support. The weak link seems to be a small rechargeable lead-acid battery that refuses to take a charge after about two years of sporadic use. Replacement parts are not available. The first Coleman heater I bought cost me about $120. Now the prices range from $200 (but out of stock) to about $500. It's worth $200 but not much more. It was difficult getting product support or parts from Coleman. A complaint letter and part order was not answered for three months.
Postscript:
Coleman later relaced the entire unit free of charge, with a more up-to-date Version 3, which wastes less water while heating up. I was surprised that they never sent me a letter or email saying a new one was on the way. It just appeared at the house of a neighbor who receives my deliveries when I am not there. The replacement unit is working well, but has a crack on the outer case. The failure of my original unit was apparently due to the water pump, not the battery. If they get the bugs out of this unit, provide product support and keep the price below $300, I recommend it.
Customer Review: Poor Build Quality Sport shop rating: 2 Stars
Bought this when it was on at half price. Even then ended up returning it. The build quality is not of a very high standard. Out of the box we had many issues with leaks. Then the front control dial would only work at a couple of positions, so the product out of the box was not usable. Due to the obvious poor build quality rather than just return it for a replacement I could see that even if you get a fully functioning one, it may last you just long enough that you'll have a faulty unit after your warranty is up, not to mention the coast and hassle of dealing with warranty anyway, and believe me at some point wou will need to do so if you aquire this.
Customer Review: GREAT -- WHEN IT DOES NOT BREAK Sport shop rating: 2 Stars
I have had two of these units. Within a year, both units broke in the very same way. The battery charges but the unit behaves as if the battery is dead. I have confirmed the battery, and my spare battery, are both charged fine. It is great when it works.
So, I highly recommend you also buy a solar water shower as a backup because this unit is NOT dependable. This weekend our solar water shower backup saved us! Coleman products have really deteriorated in quality over the years. It is sad.
