Description of Coleman Hot Water-On-Demand Portable Water Heater

Hot Water on Demand Portable Water Heater
Heat water for cooking, to wash dishes, take showers, and make tea and coffee in just five seconds, with the Coleman Hot Water-On-Demand Portable Water Heater. Whether you're boating or camping, the Coleman Portable Water Heater will make your experience of the outdoors easier and more comfortable with on demand hot water.

With variable temperature control from scalding (hot enough for tea or coffee) to cold and anywhere in between, the Coleman Portable Water Heater provides on-demand hot water as you need it. The heater comes with a 5-gallon collapsible water container but can be adapted for use with a hose with an additional accessory (sold separately) for continuous flow water. The heater works to heat water in just five seconds with a built in propane fueled burner (propane sold separately). Unlike traditional methods of heating water in the great outdoors (think tiny camp stove and two gallon pot) the heater is equipped with a built in igniter so you can turn the water on and off as you need it. A simple turn of the heater's dial delivers the hot water in just five seconds.

The Coleman Hot Water-On-Demand Heater can heat 40 gallons of water on just one Coleman 16.4 ounce propane bottle and a single pump battery charge. Additional accessories that are sold separately include: a spray adapter for showering, a carry case, a water hose adapter for continuous water flow, and a bulk propane adapter.

Specifications:

  • Built in ignite
  • Instant on/off
  • Swing-out spout
  • Variable temperature control
  • Uses propane for heating
  • Battery-operated pump

Customer Review: Great cabin product - I adapted it for the rain barrel
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

We've had the coleman hot-water-on-demand unit for about four years, since we were building a cabin. While our cabin has power, we chose not to invest in a well and septic system. The county permitted us to have a privy and we set up a rain-water collection system which fills a 55 gallon barrel with less than a half inch of rainfall. We had been hauling water (from home) for the shower, but the 5 gallon bag is only good for about two showers. So when we got the rainbarrel, we started filling it right there next to the cabin. But, even that seemed a bit tedious. I bought Coleman's hose adapter, but it takes the place of the pump and assumes you have at least 4psi water pressure. That didn't work. So I went to our neighboorhood hardware store and bought a 3/4" theaded plastic adapter. 3/4" threads on one end, a short flange in the middle and a 1/2" hose fitting on the other. I carefully cut a 3/4" hole in the top of the bag (I stuck a 1" board in through the filler hole and drilled through the plastic using a 3/4" auger and the board for a backing so I didn't go all the way through. Then, I used two fingers to hold the nut in place inside the bag while I threaded in the plastic adapter. I was able to get it pretty tight. I could have used a sealer but it was for outside use so I didn't care about a little leak.
Then I ran a section of garden hose from one of the two rain barrel spigots and clamped it on the fitting. Opened the valve and the bag filled right up (slowly, of course). Now, I can just fill it on demand, or open the valve before a show and close it when done. It keeps it full. I also ran and extension cord over to the unit (which doubles as our kitchen sink faucet) so I can recharge the battery as needed. We leave it outside all summer. So, we have a table on our back deck with a plastic dish pan under the HOD spigot, and when we want to shower, we step next to that where I've mounted the shower head and plug that into the spigot. I might post a video (but not of an actual shower, ha ha).

Customer Review: Now I'm spoiled...
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

I have been surviving camping quite well for 4 yrs. by heating water on a high-powered propane stove and using a battery-powered shower head for bathing. Then one day I looked at a Zodi water heater and started researching what was available. All I can say is the Coleman Hot Water On Demand is slick and that's the one I chose. The way the spout tucks away into the handle along with the quick response by just turning a dial is simply jaw-dropping. Even water for a cup of coffee can be had by holding the dial temporarily at its hottest setting. The last couple of years I have been looking for some shortcuts so that I have time for some additional activities, and this is ia milestone. No more doing dishes and showers late at night because I wasn't around enough to heat water earlier. I can make quicker camping set-ups by using this device. I can even give my horse warm baths after he's done working. I'll probably get through half a year on one propane bottle and battery charge. One thing did happen: I first purchased a unit that failed to charge properly even after a long period of time (the green light would only come on if I used the DC adapter - even after that was green, if I plugged in the AC adapter, it would go back to red - maybe a bad AC adapter?). This was probably just a fluke, and I ended up returning it -- the second unit was fully charged within 10 minutes! I have to be careful since rechargeable units and I don't always get along. I think this device will make my most favorites list along with my LED, remote-controlled lantern. The people I camp with have sophisticated trailers and I've been keeping up very well even though my trailer is smaller and "primitive". Since they don't let their hot-water heaters run all the time, they have to wait about half an hour until their water heater gets up to speed before they can take a shower. I won't tell them if you don't that I have hot water in 5 seconds! It will probably be noticed, though, when I show up all spiffy in a fraction of what it used to take.

Customer Review: Best Portable Hot Water device!
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

Have had one for over three years now. Like another reviewer, it's original purpose was for washing the dog in the backyard. I purchased the water hose adapter and the shower head. It still works great, and nothing has broken on it. The folks that complain about wasting water, (especially if there is no source of fresh water), should collect their water until it gets hot. It's just irresponsible to let it run down the drain or the ground if it's your only potable water supply. However, it's very probable that their units are not working properly, and should have been immediately replaced under warranty. This one gets hot, not just warm, and piping hot. You really can make coffee and tea with this unit.

And that brings us to it's current use as a hot water source when camping with the kid's Cub Scout Pack. It's used for heating water for the tea and instant coffee drinkers early in the morning, for washing after meals, and washing hands all day long.

Having had bad experiences with other products, (portable rechargeable air compressor, and Chinese made florescent-bulb camping lantern), that use heavy rechargeable batteries I immediately opened up the unit when I brought it home to see what kind of battery it came with. It's a very cheap, low-quality Chinese battery, and as such MUST be stored fully charged. If you are not going to be using the HWOD for more than three months, take it out and recharge the battery, just to maintain it. The battery MUST be recharged regularly, or it will completely lose it's ability to be charged. That's just a characteristic of this type of Chinese-made sealed battery. It should also be diligently charged whenever the LED light tells you to, and topped off daily, (if you can using the 12v adapter, or a solar panel). This unit gets used constantly to wash the dog, when not camping so the battery is still in good shape after three years.

Customer Review: Works great - highly responsive

We're dedicated car-campers and have always heated water on the stove for cleaning dishes and ourselves. Never again. The Hot-Water-On-Demand product works very well. You get hot water almost instantly and there is enough temperature control to use this as a shower with the optional sprayer attachment. We still use a sun shower for ourselves due to the hose length, but for cleaning our kids, washing dishes, washing your hands or face, etc this is fantastic. Battery life has been fully acceptable. We charge it before a trip then keep it plugged into the car when we're moving between camping locations. The propane cylinders last a reasonably long time - we've gotten 6 days out of the current cylinder and it hasn't run out. The unit is light enough to easily move it to where you need it. Ours tends to live at one end of the picnic table and we put a small basin below it to act as a sink. I fully plan to use this for the upcoming tailgate season.

Customer Review: Great for cabins
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

I've had this for 4 years at my (waterless) cabin, and it works very well. The water we use comes off the roof into a rain barrel, and it was easy to adapt the pump to screw into the rain barrel. We do have power inside the cabin, so recharging the battery is easy. Our battery lasts for about a month of quick showers, and I have noticed that after 4 years, it doesn't hold a charge quite as well. In the cold, the battery needs recharging more quickly. I use this every evening, 4 months of the year, for a quick 2 gallon shower.

A small propane cylinder lasts about 3 weeks of daily showers. The propane heats up the water very quickly--usually in 3 seconds. I avoid wasting that water by putting the hose in a bucket for those 3 seconds; then I pour the bucket of cold water back into the rain barrel. Simple.

The water temperature can get extremely hot, so do be cautious.

I give this machine my highest recommendation.
