Sports reviews of Coleman Folding Shovel and PickCustomer Review: Much smaller than expected; good for emergencies only Sport shop rating: 3 Stars
My first impression upon opening the box was "is this it??" The shovel blade is about the same size as a compact disc (CD). The blade folds on a hinge so that the overall size when put away is incredibly small, and half of the handle unscrews to shorten its overall length. When it's in the storage bag you'd never guess that an entire shovel was stowed in it. And in a sense, it isn't. This is more like a folding trowel than a folding shovel. The handle seems sturdy enough but the blade itself is so small, it's hard to compare this to a real shovel that one would use to actually dig something. In a pinch this would get the job done, I suppose. And since it's meant for emergencies, I guess I can't complain. But be warned that it will probably be smaller than what you're expecting. Quality seems okay. The "saw blade" (quotes are intentional) is a joke. The "teeth" (again, intentional) are rounded. It's hard to see what material this is designed to cut. In other words, don't rely on this tool for your only saw. At the end of the day, it's cheap, extremely portable, and will probably suffice in a pinch to do some basic (okay, VERY basic) digging.
Customer Review: Sturdy, but TINY Sport shop rating: 3 Stars
Coleman's folding shovel is a sturdy, but TINY tool. The product description describes it as being 23" long when unfolded. I measured it at 16". The shovel head measures just
3 5/8" x 5". It would be good for hiking or backpacking and the carrying pouch could be attached to a belt, but it is not the size I was expecting to "out" a campfire. I gave it 3 stars for it's sturdy construction.
Customer Review: Possible defect? Sport shop rating: 3 Stars
I liked the price on this combination pick/shovel. The size and weight are good and the quality appears to be there. One major issue is that when locked in the shovel position the shovel will still fold over because of rounded corners on the locking side. I wonder if I got a reject? This is not the case on the pick side? Very strange..
Customer Review: Meh Sport shop rating: 3 Stars
Feels a bit lightweight and like I could break it easily. Very good for sandy campsites, not so much for heavier dirt. Very good for emergency tool. Small and quite compact, would be great for a winter emergency kit. Handle is short, and my roommate broke his the first time he used it. Feels sturdy enough, just be careful with it.
Customer Review: not bad a little heavy Sport shop rating: 3 Stars
works good if you fold the blade all the way out and use it as a shovel, otherwise it wiggles loose after some use. The carry pouch leaves a lot to be desired and it's a tad too heavy for my liking.
