Sports reviews of Coleman 9949-750 Road Trip Grill LXECustomer Review: Two years of lid closed grilling... Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
I bought this grill about two years ago after we had bought a townhouse. Never have taken it on trip, rather this is my primary grill and I wheel it out of our basement out to our tiny little yard every time I want to use it. That's why its size and portability are great. There's lots of reviews on this product from various times and I'm not sure if everything that is said applies still today. That said, I think it's a great grill and here's my comments on the grill that I own.
- The grill cooks very hot. Keep the gas on low, and cook on the perimeters of the grilling surface.
- Like many others suggested, I put foil down under the grill plates for easy clean up.
- I am unsure about some of the reviews that say you can't cook with the lid shut. There is nothing in my instructions that say this, and I cook with the lid down all the time with no problems. Again, I cook with the gas on low.
- Do make sure you extend the side tables every time you use the grill.
- Do use a grill cooking spray on the surfaces. As it does cook hot, this prevents food from sticking.
- If this will be your primary grill at home, do buy the "Coleman High-Pressure Propane Hose and Adapter" so that you can use a regular propane tank with this grill
- Try to remove the food/grease from the plates while it's still warm. Makes clean up much easier. Otherwise, just let the grilling plates soak over night. Clean up should not be a hassle for a grill... but also remember, it is a grill. I know it looks pretty, but if you obsess over keeping it looking like it did the day you got it, cleaning those plates will make you go crazy.
-There is a lot of grilling area, you can certainly feed the masses with this grill and company always love the grill and the food.
It's a great grill at a great price. I highly recommend it.
Customer Review: i love it!!! Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
I've had it for 12 days and used it 10 of those days. I love this grill!
I love that the grill is divided into 2 removable halves. I tend to grill only a few things on any given day and use 1 half of the grill, leaving the other side for the next day. Of course you can fire up both burners and fill it up. It would hold 8-10 burgers easily.
my grill had NO warning sticker/placard about not cooking with the lid down (plastic handle will melt?) But based on other reviews I've read, I haven't tried. I can see how the plastic handle could melt.
I've never had to cook on anything other than low and sometimes turned it to just below LOW. The grill sits only a couple of inches above the burners so it heats fast. I use an instant read meat thermometer and have turned out perfect chicken and burgers.
The enameled cast iron grill surfaces are NOT non stick, so pre-spray them with pam or a similar spray prior to lighting the grill. I put the grill halves right into the dishwasher, spray them with DAWN power dissolver and they come out super clean. I LOVE that they fit in the dishwasher!
DO LINE THE BOTTOM OF THE GRILL WITH FOIL to make clean up inside the grill easy. ALWAYS REMEMBER TO PULL OUT THE PLASTIC SIDE TRAYS BEFORE LIGHTING THE GRILL.
Assembly was easy. Put the wheels on with the provided wrench, snap on the wheel hub covers. took maybe 10 minutes.
I'm STILL using my first small bottle of propane after 10 uses (cooking on low). I wish it had a natural gas converson kit because I have a hookup on my patio. :( I'll probably upgrade to larger propane tank at some point, but for portability you can't beat the small propane tanks
Customer Review: Good for trips and to learn on. Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
We purchased a Colman Road Trip grill a few years ago to go along with us on our camping trips. Its a very well built unit with solid construction. Its fairly easy to clean and does a great job. Heat is even and very predictable. Also the cast iron grates makes for good carmalization. Thus far all the food we put to Colman has turned out great. With a coating of cooking spray applied to the grates before lighting stakes and burgers turn out great and don't stick. Just remember always apply cooking spray before cooking anything on this grill. What pleases me the most is this grill is great for doing things other than the typical burgers, stakes and hot dogs. I made some of the best meatloaf on the planet a few days before posting this review. I have this grills even heat and predictability to thank.
The only drawbacks I can think of is a bit of a flare up problem mainly because the burners being close to the grates. Also due to the compact nature of the Colman, cooking space is a bit tight. Soon I'm going to be upgrading to Weber Genesis series gas grill since I am grilling allot more than anticipated and need additional cooking space and features needed for frequent grilling.
However the Colman Road Trip was a great grill to learn on and cook on the go with. It will still serve us well for our camping trips and auxiliary uses after we get the Weber. So to those looking for a solid tailgate grill, a good grill to take on camping trips, or a predictable grill to learn on, I recommend the Colman Road Trip.
Customer Review: The little grill that COULD! Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
I've owned this grill for almost three years now. I preheat and cook with the TOP DOWN all the time. We're talking about 20+ hours so far of TOP DOWN cooking and nothing has ever melted/burnt. I use it camping sometimes cooking for 20+ people. How anyone could be complaining about not being able to cook with the top down is very strange, and I must say that I'm tending to agree with another commenter that it might just be a malicious comment trying to discredit this grill. Oy... the world we live in.
With attachements you can do pancakes on one side and burgers on the other at the same time. Or you can boil water on one side and grill on the other... it's pretty versatile.
I know people who use this as their primary home grill who have never had a problem. As for flaws, I guess the only flaw is that it's kind of a pain to clean up after grilling, as you can soak the grill-plate attachments, but you must clean all the interior surfaces by hand. Not fun, but a small price to pay for the conveinence this grill offers.
My opinion? Worth every minute of clean up to have a grill like this that I"m able to use 100% of the grill surface. Sure there are some "hot spots" and "cool spots" as with any grill, and you need to learn where they are how to cook with it. That lesson is learned after the first time you use it!
Overall this grill does an excellent job, and if/when I kill it, I'll be looking for another just like it.
Customer Review: Awesome Grill with a couple of DIY Enhancements Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
This grill has two major flaws! You cannot cook with the lid down or you will melt the handle and the locking mechanism is crap. Other than that you can't beat it. This is my second Roadtrip Grill. My first was stolen. I knew of these flaws from my last grill so I fixed it right out of the box. I drilled a hole in the locking lever and a hole in the handle then I took a small carburetor spring and looped it into the holes which now makes it very rigid and keeps the lock in the locked position. My last grill I just used a rubber band. This was very easy and should be done by Coleman. The spring (or rubber band) keeps the lid locked and prevents it from coming unlocked. Your cast iron grills will fall out during transport without it and make a frustrating mess. The other upgrade was a simple label about 3" x 3" on the inside of the lid that says "DO NOT CLOSE COVER WHILE GRILLING the plastic handle will melt!" which prevents the problem of your friends or family closing the lid an melting the handle off again. The label is simply printed off the computer and is right in your face when you are grilling. It is a shame that such an awesome grill should have such minor issues that keep it from being perfect. Someone at Coleman should be fired. Read the negative reviews and be rest assured that these two issues are major problems if not dealt with when you take the grill out of the box.
