It operates on 4 D batteries (not included), running for up to 23 hours on Low and 14 hours on High. Bulb replacement is a snap, thanks to the quick-release system. The Lantern's rugged design is weather-resistant and shatter-resistant, including a non-slip, rubberized handle for comfortable carrying, and heavy-duty thermoplastic and rubber construction so it stands up to heavy use in the outdoors. We bought this for our house for power outages and will be buying another one as well as the larger family one. This is perfect for bedrooms or small rooms for power outages--much better than flashlights and candles. I hadn't originally thought of a camping lantern for this purpose, not sure why, but in the face of an anticipated storm and power outage we saw this at the store and thought it was a good idea.
Turns out it was a great idea and works perfectly for this purpose. And it will be great to take camping as well--small, portable, easy to store. Bulbs can be replaced.
UPDATE: i do like this lantern, however, i found one that i like even better. it has a better light and seems much more durable. GE SteelBEAM Classic Krypton Lantern (Green)

I needed this lantern for a backpacking trip with my kids, the one we already have is too big. I bought one for each of our tents. the lantern worked out perfectly, it's lightweight enough to hang from the middle of the tent and plenty bright enough for a four man. I noticed the difference in the brightness of the low setting and high setting but definitely, if you don't need the high, don't waste the batteries. If there is a brighter, small, not too expensive lantern out there, I'd like to know. I wish this was brighter but it was sufficient.

I received this item in perfect condition as far as I could tell, however the lantern would not turn on right away. I removed and replaced the batteries probably 6 or 7 times before the light finally turned on. I don't know if maybe the bulb needed to "settle" for a while after shipping, but it did cause me a bit of a fright at first. If you have the same problem, set the lantern aside for 20 minutes or so then try again before giving up.Customer Review: Very Handy

I just got two of these little lanterns for the winter time, in case the lights fail in Reno here (the winter is looking to get crazy this year). These lanterns are smallish but give out a good amount of light. They aren't something you'd want to go spelunking with but they are fairly durable for home or light camping use. The battery duration is decent and the controls simple. I'd definitely recommend them.Customer Review: Just what I needed

This was a good buy. It lit up my 3 person tent well enough (not super bright), but I agree that the difference between the "low" setting and the "high" setting is hardly even noticeable. It was nice to have in addition to flashlights for our tent and also to keep at our camping workstation at night. Seems durable. It'll be useful for any winter power outages in our home.
