The WideBeam's Xenon blue-tipped bulb provides a whiter light, for greater visibility. The light's flat surface base allows you to stand the Flashlight upright, for hands-free area lighting. The soft rubber handle makes it easy to carry, and the shock-absorbing head means it will withstand heavy use. The Dual Action WideBeam Flashlight runs on 4 D-cell batteries (not included). This dual-action flashlight has a regular path light that gives you a center-spot of light with a softer perimeter of light, plus a seven-watt U-tube fluorescent area light to brighten a work area. The Coleman Widebeam also has a flat surface base which allows the light to stand up-right when using the area lighting function. The regular flashlight beam is 50-percent broader than traditional flashlights, and the use of a Xenon blue-tipped bulb provides a whiter light. Additionally, this Coleman flashlight is designed with a 140-degree beam of light to more closely match the human peripheral field of vision.

I have one of these stashed in each room and in the trunk of the car. In rolling blackout season you can safely illuminate a surprisingly wide area with one light. They're very bright and the base is stable so you can easily set them upright to shine up at the ceiling like a lamp without them falling over. The fact that it doubles as both a flashlight and a lantern makes this product a lot more useful than the standard Coleman lantern (or a regular flashlight) to me.
For the other reviewer: to insert batteries you will need a screwdriver or a coin. There's a big screw toward the front of the flashlight that you remove to pop off the main light and insert the batteries.

I received a Coleman 4D Dual Action Widebeam Flashlight as a Christnas gift. I found it to be an excellent light. The wide beam illuminated my work items with very little shadowing. The "white light" side works great when I am attaching items to my computer. I dropped the gift about 8 feet onto a tile floor and the flashlight didn't survive.
I missed that flashlight so much that I had to replace it. And I will store it on the lowest shelf!

GREAT product! We had a power outage last night...and the Coleman came in real handy. Worked perfectly with the Dual Action Widebeam...bright as needed. Installing the 4D batteries was easy too.
I am confident that it will work just fine while camping. Again...GREAT product!
