Sports reviews of Coleman 1-Person Sit-On-Top Touring Kayak with PaddleCustomer Review: Great fun, exceeded expectations Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
This kayak was a great find for us. We now own 6 -- 4 singles and 2 doubles Coleman 2-Person Sit-On-Top Deluxe Touring Kayak with Paddles. We use the kayaks primarily on rivers which include class I and II rapids. I would not recommend these for anything more extreme. The kayaks are well constructed and have weathered several trips down the river, including some scraping over rocks. What makes these particularly attractive is the fast inflation/deflation process with the Coleman pumps Coleman Rechargeable Quick Pump. I can throw the rafts in the back of a van or SUV, inflate them at the put-in point, enjoy a great ride, deflate the rafts at the take-out point, and load them in the back of another vehicle. This past weekend we put 6 boats with 8 riders in the water and were able to get all the people and boats (deflated) into our SUV at the end of the ride.
Best things about these boats:
* Inexpensive way to enter the hobby
* Well constructed for the cost
* Inflatability makes them far more portable than others
* Very stable -- great way to learn
* Clever air valve system works very well with Coleman pumps
* Lightweight -- can be easily carried
Worst things about these boats:
* They are slow and not as maneuverable as traditional kayaks
* Paddles can be tricky to assemble. If done wrong they may come apart
* Difficult to dry out once deflated
* The paddle holder clips on the side of the boat are flimsy and do not work
* Proper inflation requires additional manual blowing after using a pump
Tips for new users:
* Make sure the paddle segments with the black endcaps go into the paddle heads
* The knurled markings on the aluminum paddle segments should be covered by the plastic grips if installed properly
* Buy an electric Coleman pump (any will do, Battery powered is the weakest but most portable)
* Follow these steps to get your boat fully inflated (each boat will take about 5 minutes to inflate from start to finish):
1) Blow all the air in you can via the pump
2) Leave the pump on, and without removing it from the valve, push in on the pump so the clear outer valve "seats" on the inner yellow plug
3) Remove the pump and continue to the next air chamber without closing the outer valve tab
4) Once all the air chambers are pumped as best you can with the pump, you now go to manual mode
5) Place you mouth over the seated valve and pull on the clear tab with your hand to un-seat the valve (you must have your mouth sealed over the valve or you will lose a lot of air)
6) Blow in as much air as you can -- usually only 4-5 breaths
7) Without removing your mouth from the valve, push in with your teeth to re-seat the clear outer valve over the yellow plug
8) Remove your mouth from the valve and press in the clear tab. Repeat for all chambers.
* When you finish kayaking, use the deflation feature of the pump to suck the air out -- makes the boats very compact
