I bought this to replace a Planet Bike 1 Watt LED light that failed when it got wet. I liked the look of this because it was a little smaller and I've always liked Cateye lights.
The main reason I need a light like this is the run time. I ride brevets (200, 300, 400, and 600k bike rides) that require some all-night riding so the extended run time of these lights is great. They have an excellent beam pattern which is smooth and even. Uneven beam patterns make it more difficult to spot potholes and rocks. The brightness is pretty average for a 1 Watt LED.
Changing the batteries is fairly easy but the batteries have an unusual layout (both bottom batteries are positive to the back, both upper batteries are positive to the front). You need to memorize this if you plan on changing the batteries in the dark.
The mount is unusual, one I hadn't seen before. Essentially it's a plastic hoseclamp which means it will fit any diameter handlebar. I like it. The only problem I see is that on narrow diameter handlebars there is an excess of strap sticking back which might be an issue for some people but it hasn't bothered me.
The lens lets a little light out to the sides to help you be seen from either side. I very much doubt enough light gets out to make any difference, though.
This light has a flashing mode which might be good in well lit areas where a bicycle light is just another light amongst many. I'm not sure flashing bicycle lights are legal in all states. I know they're not legal in all countries.
Notice the dent on the underside just behind the lens. This is exactly where your brake/gear cables need to go. Other lights don't have this so the cables push on the light and can push it out of alignment as you ride. Doesn't happen with this light. Love the dent.
This light is suitable for slow speeds, perhaps up to 15mph depending on your night riding skills and vision but is not suitable for mountain biking or fast road biking. It lets you be seen by other road users but is not bright enough to see by if you're riding fast.
