Sports reviews of Captains of Crush Hand Gripper - TrainerCustomer Review: These do their job: strengthen your grip! Great for developing false grip strength! Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
How do I know they do their job? I bought the trainer first and could barely close it, and two weeks later I crushed the #1 which is a lot harder. Buy these. I now have 4 and I didn't have to wait thanks to amazon prime!
Why I just now heard about these and the importance of grip strength after recently turning 30, I'll never know. Are these some kind of secret kept between the most elite athletes? I bumped into them while doing some research for developing false grip strength for muscle ups on the rings. At 6'1" 200 lbs, I consider a muscle up a nice feat of strength for me. I can do pull ups and dips no problem, and the transition isn't even a problem, but the first time I tried a false grip, I couldn't even support my weight. After a couple months of progressions doing rows, I can finally hold enough weight to jump into a muscle up, but strength for the false grip is still my limiting factor keeping me from doing it properly. I read about these and decided to start with a trainer. I was torn between starting with the trainer and the #1, but after reading some reviews I went with the trainer. I'm glad I did. I can pump 10 out with my right hand no problem, but 5 is pretty much the limit with my left. My right hand is considerably stronger than my left, so I do whatever I can with my left hand and repeat it with my right so the left can catch up somewhat. Even if you can start with a #1, I would recommend the trainer for warm ups. These are the most solid, effective, quality pieces of grip training equipment on the market, and I am very happy with my results so far. I intend to add an update when I progress to the #1.
After my first workout using the trainer, I was unable to close it with my left hand two days later, and I could barely close it with my right hand. I could tell I over did it, and no warm up reps took a toll. I liked the trainer so much I ordered the guide and sport. When I received them, I proceeded to to warm up and I pumped out 10 reps with the trainer in both my left and right hand no problem! I immediately ordered the #1. Every time I can do 10 reps with both hands I'm ordering the next level. I got the #1 yesterday and squeezed it once with both hands for two sets, then I couldn't close it with either hand for the rest of the day. I can't put these things down, but I don't want inflammation or injury so I'm trying to do it every other day. How I could barely close the trainer one week, and then close the #1 the next, I have no idea, but I definitely recommend warming up with the easier CoCs first. I actually feel stronger after warming up, and it reduces chances of injury. I can't believe I just spent over $100 on these in a two week period, but I do think they are worth every penny if you want to strengthen your grip.
Customer Review: welcome to the fun world of grip! Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
I don't know how it is on the female side of the issue, but I can say that a firm grip is, for men, a silent marker of strength. Take the man who has the big arms and the tattoos and put him alongside the wiry, bearded neighborhood mechanic. The former gave you a "weak fish" flaccid handshake, the latter gave you that "sinews of iron" greeting that told of power in the hands that could put your own hand in a world of pain if he squeezed hard. Big tattoo guy LOOKS more formidable, but which one has earned, in at least some small way, more of your "primal" respect?
I know that sounds ridiculous, waxing philosophical about unimportant things like strength in handshakes, but I really do believe there is something in us that (maybe boyishly) wants superhero power in the hands. Captains of Crush grippers are your ticket to that power! This is the "Trainer" gripper, the original first in a series going up from there through numbers one to four. Only a select few will ever close the number four gripper, (requiring 365 pounds of pressure to the Trainer's 100 pounds) but the rest of us can dream and work at it.
With their compact size and durability, you could take this gripper for a ride anywhere and work on it at the end of the day. If you have weak hand strength, Ironmind produces "Guide" and "Sport" grippers that I recommend purchasing before this one. The Trainer is perfect for the person who has some experience with hand work or with weights in the gym, and is looking to begin serious grip training. And I mean serious: even the Trainer is not going to be something the average strength training guy can close multiple times.
Be warned: the knurling on the grips of these things will bite into your hands something fierce, causing rough skin and calluses. If you've got a wife or girlfriend that can't stand rough hands, you're going to have a tough time with these. My advice if you get any guff is to stand up for your rugged hands: they are the mark of hard work and used to be the normal thing.
As a final note, Ironmind now offers "inbetween" grippers at the 1.5, 2.5, and 3.5 levels, so we no longer have to make such a huge jump in difficulty between grippers. The Captains of Crush grippers are an excellent compliment to your weight-training regimen and a good source of "real-world" strength training in the bargain. You'll be on your way to that awesome handshake in no time.
Customer Review: This is a quality gripper Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
The Captains of Crush grippers I have seen and used (both this one and the number one) feel like they are seriously well made and suited for hand strength training of the kind a gripper can be used for. It also feels as if it has an effect on what might be regarded as 'wrist' strength, something I had never noticed before when ages ago as a kid I had used hand grippers... none of which offered this kind of resistance.
These grippers allow even someone with a fairly strong grip (in fact, getting up to the higher numbers, probably would allow almost anyone no matter how strong their grip ... except perhaps an orangutan or a gorilla perhaps) to do training with lower reps. These definitely are not the ones like from my youth where you feel you have to squeeze off reps from dawn to dusk to get a workout ... in fact, as with training with serious resistance, you want to be careful not to overwork - a sign to me you really have a useful exercise device for strength building... you have to treat training with these with the respect for the body's recovery requirements that you apply to serious strength or power work with weights, for example.
In case you are interested in the resistance rating for the Captains of Crush grippers for all of their different models, it can be found in terms of pounds on the Captains of Crush website. [So you can see the difference in terms of pounds of resistance between the 'Sport' , the 'Trainer', the 'No. 1', 'No. 2', etc. - for example, according to their website, the 'Sport' is rated at 80 lbs, the 'Trainer' at 100 lbs., the 'No. 1' at 140 lbs,the No. 2 at 195 lbs - the website gives ratings for all the grippers except the #1.5, #2.5. and #3.5 Grippers].
The website also gives a list of all those who have under official conditions managed to demonstrate ability to close grippers No.3 strength and stronger.
Customer Review: Perfect starting gripper for non-lifters Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
Want to have a strong grip? Need to increase forearm strength without going to the gym? Here is the beginning of your journey: CoC Trainer
Now if you are a big weight lifter, or do other grip exercises, you probably will still want this for warm up, but buy the #1 for reps. If you are new to lifting like me, then you will probably want the Sport model for warm ups along with this for real reps.
So does this thing offer progress? Well, I'll let you decide by this personal example. I started with a Sport and Trainer. I could just do my warm up reps with the Sport, and I could JUST barely crank out my 3 reps of 6 with the Trainer. 3-4 weeks later, I am able to easily do the Sport and squeeze 3 sets of 15 with the Trainer. So did it help me get a better grip? Does it work? I think the numbers speak for themselves.
Are there any cons? A few, but not enough to drop this fine piece of equipment below 5 stars. I already have rough hands, so they didn't bother my hands much, but my friends say the first few weeks on "soft hands" can be rough because of handle texture. Another downside is that these things tend to move after several reps. You might find yourself readjusting your hand around the grip during your reps.
Overall this is a great product to train for better forearms and give you a more confident, if not crushing, grip. Want more proof? Get these and workout for a few weeks, and then go shake some hands. Big hands. Those people you know that like to shake hard. Not only will their squeeze not do much (unless they are grip trainers too), but your grip will be MUCH firmer. It really is a great feeling...
Customer Review: A Must for any Strength Athlete At Any Level Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
I should start out by saying up until recently I was not impressed by grip strength and really had no desire to effectively "train" my grip. Although I realized it was a big part of strength athletics I never saw it as a "stand alone" element. Powerlifters, Strongman/woman, Olympic Style Weightlifters, Mountain Climbers, Gymnasts, and Public Safety Officers will all benefit from using this piece of equipment. Be warned this is not your average store bought gripper that comes with a workout set. The Trainer level, offers a 100lb (45.35kg) resistance. Some people complain about the grip on the handle, saying it's too rough and hurts and damages the hand. I can assure you that if you are in the sports listed above, a little bit of rough knurling shouldn't faze you. The grip even looks like a barbell, with the smooth rings in the center of which creates a strangely comfortable feeling to strength and power athletes when held in the hand. The resistance is accurate, however through the squeeze you will feel an increase in tension in the wrist similar to the muscular tension effect a press has with chains in Power-lifts. It should be noted that the 100lbs is the resistance when fully closed (handles touching each other). These can also be used for isometric training as well, simulating a static hang pull up. It is very possible however to over train with these and cause tendon and ligament damage to the hands, wrist and even forearms. Do not let it deter you however from getting any of the Captains of Crush Grippers.
As for some motivation, Magnus Samuelsson closed the No. 4 (365lb) Gripper in 2004. Happy Training!
