Description of Captains of Crush Hand Gripper - No. 1

Known around the world as the gold standard for building and testing hand strength, Captains of Crush Grippers are the single most important grip strength tool you can choose--ready to produce the quickest gains in grip strength and hand health. Available in ten strengths, there is a model perfect for everyone from rehab patients to World's Strongest Man competitors. These are the grippers that changed the world--never before had anyone taken grippers so seriously and pushed their development so far. Along the way, many of the biggest names in the strength world have shaken hands with and embraced CoC Grippers. Anything else is just a gripper. If increasing your grip strength is your goal, the ideal situation is to have three different grippers: one for your warm-ups, one for your work sets, and one that is your challenge gripper. No. 1: if you've been training your grip already, start here; most strong guys cannot close the No. 1 the first time they try.

Customer Review: The COC #1- Where to Start if Your Hands are Strong
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

The COC 1 is a good place to start for men who already lift weights, work manual labor or have otherwise strong hands. Beware that grip strength is entirely it's own thing and a lot of "strong" people cannot close the #1. Still, with effort, people of ordinary strength can find themselves closing it with practice.

In my opinion, the #1 is the best place to start for men with already "strong" hands (strong by 'ordinary' standards, not 'grip strength practitioner' standards). If you are just beginning with grip training, go with the "Trainer" or even the "Sport". Under no circumstances- save for true freaks of nature or dedicated weightlifters- should anyone start above a #1 unless your goal is to own a gripper that you simply can't close.

Customer Review: These babies are no joke!!
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

Man, these grippers are the real deal!
Like the other reviewers, I had used many of the average store bought grippers. Those just don't cut it.
The COC grippers define the word "effective". I got the Trainer, and managed to get myself up to 4-5 sets of 15 reps after about a month.
My grip felt oh-so strong, and my forearms took on a noticeably more muscular look. No joke here; I have never really SEEN the effects of fitness training so fast. But, like me, if you use these grippers you will catch yourself looking at your forearms more and more with a smile on your face! Recently, I purchased No.1. It's gonna take a little longer to get that one mastered! (Don't ditch the Trainer!)
Highly recommended!

Customer Review: the standard for a reason.
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

I'm a long time fan of the CoC grippers.
since I purchased my first set (2003?), IRONMIND has improved the composition of the metal used for the springs, reducing the need to wipe the gripper spring with oil to avoid squeaking.
the knurled grip is a huge plus in my opinion, when you're trying to close the more advanced grippers later on, you don't want them to slip. try a little chalk to dry out your skin to keep it from folding and callousing (if that sort of thing bothers you...)

If you're serious about grip strength, check out John Brookfield's books Mastery of Hand Strength and The Gripmasters Manual. Invaluable manuscripts for any strength athlete's library.

Customer Review: MUCH harder than expected
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

Well, I have always had a store bought gripper, and got up to being able to do it about 200 times. I thought it was time to get a new one and got a no. 1. WOW!!! It was tough...I could get about an inch away before failure. You have to realize most people that lift weights on a daily basis cannot close the no. 1. I tested many people at the gym that I know and most couldn't do it. I can do about 25 pull ups so my forearms and ridiculously weak if that's what you're thinking. If you think you have already really strong forearms, get this one...if not, I would suggest the trainer to start with. Don't worry about it being too easy. These things are tougher than you would expect.

Customer Review: Great Things
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

Probably the best of its type of..er...exercise device (gripper sounds like a fake word).

Fast delivery, very good quality, though it took a little while for my hands to get used to the metal grip (it scrapes skin off at the beginning).

The No. 1 wasn't all that difficult to close, but I still can't close No. 2 (even after being able to close No. 1.5 and do about 10 reps with it). Maybe there should be a No. 1.75 or something.

If my wrist were not horribly screwed up (possibly from using the same Captains of Crush gripper, though that's unlikely), I'd be using it even now. Instead, all I can do is squeeze the Iron Mind egg. How sad.
