Customer Review: Get ready for a TOUGH grip workout

I just received the #1.5 (167.5 lbs) in the mail this afternoon. This is the first CoC gripper I've ever held in my hand. I gave it a squeeze and thought to myself, "OMG, this is REALLY hard to close. Why didn't I buy the #1 instead?" After a few more tries, I eventually got it shut completely once with each hand. That's it. Just once. Most of the time, it only compresses from like 3-inches wide to 1-inch. Closing that last inch is something I have to rest and psyche myself up for. This is, in a word, INTENSE.
Let me start by telling you a little about myself. I'm 6'2", 198 lbs. I can bench press 185 lbs ten times and do ten pull-ups at a time. I've dabbled in rock climbing and do my pullups on a hangboard in the basement. So the roughness of the CoC gripper isn't really an issue for my skin. I drive 20+ miles each way for my commute to work and use a generic store-bought gripper in the car to keep myself occupied. I use the Gripmaster Pro at my desk at work - the gray one with the maximum 11 lbs per finger. So, let's just say that I'm no stranger to training my grip.
I fancied myself "above average" in the grip department and skipped the #1 level to start. Well, the CoC #1.5 is kicking my rear end. I was hoping for something that I could work up to 10 reps per hand eventually. Honestly, I'm not sure that I'll ever get there. This thing is THAT tough to close. So, long story short, before selecting your gripper be honest with yourself and your goals. If your goal is to take it to the next level from the generic Walmart gripper, get the Trainer or the #1. If you have REALLY strong forearms already, then start with #1 or maybe even the #1.5. If you're an absolute freak who thinks he can get certified on the #3 (or higher) someday, then try the #2. Remember that only like five people in the world have even closed a #4 ever. The CoC product is designed for truly world-class grips.
Personally, I wish I had started with the #1 instead. The #1.5 is not something you can just squeeze casually while sitting in traffic. Just closing it once is an accomplishment. So, be careful where you start. But I give it 5-stars because this thing feels like it will outlast me.
UPDATE (31-Jan-2011)
After one day of use, the #1.5 gave me blisters on my ring and pinky fingers. So I had to let those heal for about a week before trying again. Anyway, I'm pleased to announce that miraculously I'm now able to squeeze out about 5-6 full reps per hand with the #1.5. I went from only 1 rep to 6 reps in just two weeks. So, yes, grip strength is something that can jump leaps and bounds with proper training. And Captains of Crush is the tool you'll need to get there. I'm glad I bought the #1.5 after all. Just so I could have something more casual for my commute to work, I went and ordered the Trainer as well. That will be arriving sometime this week.
