Sports reviews of CamelBak Men's M.U.L.E 3-Liter Hydration PackCustomer Review: A UPS Seasonal Driver Helper's prospective! Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
This pack (black/brown) has saved my life, OK well... maybe not quite but it has certainly given me an edge over my competition these last three Peak Seasons on time-micromanagement. It saves me time, and most importantly it saves my Driver(s) time by them not having to keep going off-route for me to fill up, say a cup or other out of date water storage alternative. It saves ME time and also provides ME a lot of convenience because I can and do simply throw it into the cab, strap it down directly in front of me and merely lean forward slightly in the jump-seat to grab a much-needed gulp of water in-between package drops (the hose is JUST a tad short to sit back and do this but it's not a huge deal), and again all without my Driver having to pull over for me to get and drink from the water buried SOMEWHERE in the back of the cargo-hold area. BIG PLUS and saves probably 30 minutes to an hour out of our day, just like that!
When we encounter business stops that demand more time than a usual residential drop, I am also able to quickly and easily unstrap the M.U.L.E. from the package car's cab and toss it onto my back to keep hydrated during that function of the job too, as well as when we dump off outgoing ground or air for 15 minutes to feeder trailers. You can't wheel out multiple packages on a handcart OR handle packages with both hands at-all while sipping on a big-gulp cup! Again, HUGE PLUS!!!
As for the actual bag itself, it holds everything I need for a day's work. I keep my gloves and an extra pair of socks in the front-bottom pocket. I put my extra pens, pain killers, rain poncho, chapstick, sunscreen and First Aid supplies into the middle-medium pocket (my wallet and keys also go in there so I can't lose them). In the largest pocket I sometimes keep a couple of bananas and other snacks, in addition to my DIAD and other quick-reference job manuals. And as for the top-most, smallest and water-proof pocket I put my cell phone in there. Easily heard and accessible and also totally secure and protected to boot, a very nice touch!
As for the reservoir system, its 3L holding capacity tides me over for hours and hours. I don't usually have to fill it back up again (necessitating an off-route detour to the nearest fast food joint with a water/ice dispenser) unless we work over eight hours or if it's a very hot, hellish weather day (lasts me 4 hours on days like that). Not only that, but it hasn't developed any bacteria or other issues in three years of brutal use and abuse - exactly as advertised. The hose has become discolored near the mouthpiece, but I suspect that's due to it having had to be put directly next to/onto the Package Car's heater system my second Peak because of where I had to strap it on to that particular Package Car... no biggie!
Overall I am VERY satisfied with this product. It might not be as aesthetically pretty as when I first got it, but it's holding up very well (just a minor bit of fraying on the strap's edges) and I don't believe I will EVER need to replace it - barring if both straps failed (broke) and the pack were to get run over when full or else partially-full by a muti-ton UPS Package Car. Something I very seriously doubt will ever happen.
However, I would have preferred that this pack AND reservoir had been WIDER with a little more room to keep the same water storage capacity at a lesser "pop-out" dimension. If the water didn't totally pop the bag out so far, I might have been able to keep it strapped onto my back all day and have it with me when and where I need my water 24/7 (or at least throughout every minute of my work days). I tried sitting on the jumpseat of a Package Car with it still on my back my first time out, but I was having to compensate for its bulk back there by leaning forward a lot. That wasn't safe or comfortable so I abandoned that strategy. BUT, it still works out just fine how I use it currently and this isn't such a big deal, merely wishful thinking.
I honestly don't know why UPS hasn't added this or another Camelback Hydration System into their official UPS-gear catalog with a UPS shield on them already, but they should! It's the best water storage solution for this job, bar none! So, if a high-up UPS Manager is reading this, GET ON IT! They'll be selling out like candy canes before Christmas!
OVERALL I VERY HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS OR SIMILAR HYDRATION SYSTEMS TO OTHERS IN THE SAME OR SIMILAR FIELD OF WORK! YOU WON'T REGRET IT!
