Bisphenol-A is an ingredient used to make polycarbonate. As of the end of April 2008, the entire CamelBak bottle line will be available in BPA-Free materials in North America. What are phthalates? Phthalates (pronounced thal-ates) are a component added to some plastics to make them soft and pliable. None of CamelBak's bottles have ever contained phthalates. What is the BPA-free Better Bottle made from? The CamelBak Better Bottle line is made from a new copolyester polymer called Tritan, made by Eastman. It offers the same great qualities that we have come to expect from polycarbonate bottles and is 100 percent BPA-Free. The Big Bite Valve is made of medical-grade silicone for long life and taste-free performance. About CamelBak CamelBak is the originator and world leader in hands-free hydration systems. Since then, athletes from an ever-growing list of sports and activities use CamelBak hydration systems for their convenience and performance benefits. In addition to cycling, CamelBak has Hands-Free Hydration systems for hiking, running, snowboarding and skiing. CamelBak?s state-of-the-art packs and hydration systems have benefited athletes, outdoorsmen, and soldiers around the world. Sports reviews of CamelBak BPA-Free Better Bottle with Classic CapCustomer Review: Pricey for sure, but worth it... Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
...if you are a regular and massive water drinker like me. I carry water around with me all day and drink easily a gallon per day, so I figured that investing in a BPA-Free container makes a lot of sense in the long run.
Also the construction and materials of these bottles is top-notch. Very sturdy, and the plastic they use for the lid is both visually and tactilely pleasant. Where the lid screws onto the bottle, it seems to be slightly softer so it's quite leakproof and you don't have to twist it super tight for it to prevent leakage like you do with some cheaper bottles.
The shape is perfect for fitting into the mesh water-bottle side pockets of my backpacks, a SwissGear laptop pack and a Jansport daypack. One liter ties me over for a good 2-3 hours. I use one of these bottles for water, and another one for Gatorade whenever I go to the gym.
The plastic loop in the lid is great for carrying with one finger or clipping onto a strap on your backpack; it also helps you twist to open the lid. Pretty smart design!
Overall, this is one product that DOES live up to the "You get what you pay for" cliche.
* CLEANING TIP: All you need to do is clean with hot water and add a drop or two of bleach to it, then rinse. I only have to do that maybe once every 2-3 weeks, and I use my bottle every day just about. Most of the time just a simple rinse in warm water will do, but the odor develops over time due to growth of the bacteria in the backwash that happens every time you drink from it---if you pour the water out of the bottle into a glass instead of drinking directly from the bottle, I'd imagine you wouldn't have any odor issues.
Customer Review: Great alternative to water bladders Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
I use these bottles for hiking in the desert, mainly in the Grand Canyon. I used to carry water in a three-liter hydration bladder in my backback, but I found it difficult to monitor my water consumption--I never really knew whether I had one liter left or two. So, I switched to these bottles.
Here is my system: I use one bottle with a bite-valve cap, to which I have attached a drinking tube (the CamelBak Better Bottle Hands Free Adapter). That bottle goes in a bottle pouch on the outside of my backpack. I carry one to three of these 'classic cap' bottles, as well, depending on how far I am going and the availability of water along my route. They go inside my backpack. As I drain one bottle, I switch the bite-valve cap to a fresh bottle and continue. That way, I can monitor each liter of water that I drink and ensure that I pace my water consumption for the total distance to my next water stop.
The system has worked like a champ on several rim-to-rim hikes through the Grand Canyon, and it has the added advantage of being much easier to fill and keep clean than a hydration bladder. I'd recommend it without reservation.
Customer Review: Excellent water bottle. Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
I bought a couple of these to replace the BPA-laden water bottles I had been using.
I really like the 750 ml bottles... they are easy to hold, they fit in my backpack for hiking/biking and it's really easy to add a lot of ice. They do sweat a lot, but I suppose all bottles with cold water do that. I also like the lip on the lid which aids in it's removal.
I do agree with some posters that the mouth is a bit too large and it's easy to spill when you aren't careful. I can live with that.
I also purchased a 1 L bottle. This one is too big for my liking because it won't fit in my small cooler, it's a tad heavy when completely full and it's more difficult to hold because of it's diameter.
I will likely purchase 1 or 2 additional 750ml bottles in the future. Although I purchase a ton of stuff from Amazon, I found these bottles to be less expensive at a local sporting goods retailer.
Customer Review: awesome bottle Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
I have the .5 oz version, and it is practical enough for me to take everywhere - even to Vegas, where I was able to fill up on ice for the hot days. Love that it is durable, fits in a car cup holder, slender enough for bags, and wide mouth enough to easily clean with a bottle brush. BPA-free is a big plus. This and a Brita-type water pitcher in the office has saved me a lot of $ - not to mention the benefits to the environment. I like that it doesn't have a string attaching the lid - the Nalgenes I have tend to tip over because of it.
Update August 2009: My favorite new water bottle is an 18-oz Thermos, primarily because it is FANTASTIC at retaining ice water, especially in the summer time, and there is absolutely no condensation/sweating. Still love this bottle because it is super lightweight, but I'm an unrepetent Thermos fan now.
Customer Review: Great Design Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
I absolutely love this water bottle. The straw system is great. It doesn't leak, now matter how I set the bottle down. I work in restaurants and health code requires employees to have any drinks covered. This leads to a lot of waste of paper and Styrofoam cups, lids and straws. I found this hoping it would decrease my use of those products and it's my new favorite thing! It's great for the restaurant and for driving since there's no lid to remove. I can set it down on it's side in the car, no leaking, and just pick it up with one hand. Done. It's perfect for so many things. The hook is great for carrying as well. I see that replacement straws and mouthpieces are available too. I've had no need for them, but it's nice to know, as I am using it a lot.
