What is BPA?
Bisphenol-A is an ingredient used to make polycarbonate. In recent months, there has been increasing consumer demand for a bottle that is not made with Bisphenol-A (BPA), and CamelBak is proud to introduce BPA-free bottles with the same great properties customers have come to expect from polycarbonate: vibrant color, clarity, durability, dishwasher-safe, and with no residual taste. As of the end of April 2008, the entire CamelBak bottle line will be available in BPA-Free materials in North America.

What are phthalates?
Phthalates (pronounced thal-ates) are a component added to some plastics to make them soft and pliable. None of CamelBak's bottles have ever contained phthalates.

What is the BPA-free Better Bottle made from?
The CamelBak Better Bottle line is made from a new copolyester polymer called Tritan, made by Eastman. It offers the same great qualities that we have come to expect from polycarbonate bottles and is 100 percent BPA-Free. The Big Bite Valve is made of medical-grade silicone for long life and taste-free performance.

About CamelBak
CamelBak is the originator and world leader in hands-free hydration systems. The first CamelBak products proved to be very popular among mountain bikers and motocross riders, because it allowed them to drink without taking their hands off of the handlebars in technical terrain. The product began to cross over into other sports when scientific studies showed athletes drank more fluids and performed better when they wore a CamelBak. Since then, athletes from an ever-growing list of sports and activities use CamelBak hydration systems for their convenience and performance benefits.

In addition to cycling, CamelBak has Hands-Free Hydration systems for hiking, running, snowboarding and skiing. CamelBak?s state-of-the-art packs and hydration systems have benefited athletes, outdoorsmen, and soldiers around the world. While CamelBak has grown tremendously since the early days, one thing hasn't changed: CamelBak still believes in the performance advantage that proper hydration delivers for just about any activity. The privately-held company is headquartered in Petaluma, California.

Sports reviews of CamelBak BPA-Free Better Bottle with Bite Valve

Customer Review: Terrific Bottle!
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

I read lots of reviews for this and other BPA-free bottles, and spent lots of time surfing the net to see what was out there. I kept coming back to the CamelBak. I have a medical condition that has made me klutzy, so I wanted a bottle that I couldn't spill. The bite valve does the trick -- and yes, I've knocked it over multiple times. I bought two bottles: 1 liter and .75 liter.

As others have noted, it takes some practice to get used to the bite valve, but it's easy to learn.

The only thing that would make this bottle better is an insulated cover for both sizes (I think there's one for the .75 liter size) that would absorb or prevent condensation. It's been very humid his summer and anything with ice in it sweats like crazy.

Update: It's now April of 2009 and I still love my Camelbak bottles. Cleaning them can be a challenge but I've had success with Q-Tips and chopsticks (the chopsticks are for pushing the Q-Tips through the straw). The last time I cleaned my .75 liter bottle the end of a Q-Tip got stuck in the cap and I couldn't get it out. I used an unbent paperclip with a hook on the end to try to get it out and failed. Just this morning I used a bamboo skewer and succeeded in pushing out the cotton wad. Unfortunately, I seem to have damaged the cap with the paperclip. Go for the bamboo skewer before resorting to a paperclip! Now I'm weighing replacing the entire bottle or just the cap.

Customer Review: Love this water bottle!
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

I bought the .75L bottle 6 months ago and use it pretty much all the time--it goes everywhere with me. After 6 months of regular use the bottle does have some light wear (tiny scuffs/scratches) but it's hardly noticeable. Also, I love the ocean color!

As far as the bite valve goes, I haven't experienced any problems. I'm somewhat used to it from using the CamelBak backpacks. But I just love that it can tip all over the place and doesn't spill a drop. And I'm still using the bite valve it came with and don't need a new one just yet, but I do like the fact that you can purchase replacement bite valves and straws.

It's also really easy to take it apart to clean. Everyday I disassemble and wash it with dish soap. Then occasionally, maybe once a month, I soak the disassembled lid, straw, and bite valve in a weak bleach solution (like a splash of bleach in a gallon or so of water).

Now I'm going to purchase 3 more of these: a 1L for my boyfriend (so he'll stop stealing mine!), a .75L in a different color for myself, and a .5L for when I want to carry a smaller bottle (hopefully it'll fit better in cup holders and my smaller purses).

Overall, I'm really happy with my CamelBak bottle. Love that I don't go through several disposable plastic bottles a day, love that it's BPA free, is easy to carry, doesn't leak, is extremely durable, and that it comes in so many colors and sizes!

Customer Review: Pretty good
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

I used the .75 size version of this product three times a week for almost two years before it needed replacing. It started to make a "farting" noise when I would drink from it, which is kind of embarrassing, so now I'm replacing it with a new one. I use this as my water bottle for the gym. I really like how I can hold it on my pinky finger via the little handle, as opposed to having to grip it with my hand as I walk around the gym. I like how it seals up, so that I can toss it in my bag. It sometimes leaks a bit, though, when I store it on its side. But, again, it's two years old. I run it through the dishwasher about once a month. Otherwise I just use hot water.

The one downside is that you can't drink a ton of water quickly from it. With a plastic water bottle, I squeaze the bottle and drink a lot of water within 2-3 seconds. This camelbak doesn't allow you drink a huge volume of water as quickly. But that's not a problem for my purposes.

The 1L size of this product is too big to fill up via drinking fountain at the gym. It's also too heavy to put on my pinky finger. The .75 size is perfect for my needs.

One thing: you do look somewhat silly drinking out of this product. You're basically sucking a nipple, and you don't tip the product while drinking, so it's not even obvious that you're drinking water. Kinda weird, but I don't care.

Customer Review: The only water bottle I'll ever own or buy.
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

I agree with the reviewer who stated this is the Holy Grail bottle.

I went through so many water bottles before seeing this one when a friend brought hers to work. Actually, my friend had at least four because she and her husband both one one for home and one for work. I soon figured out why! Now, I own three: two pink and one orange. My husband asked me to buy him one also, and my sister bought one, as well.

The only time it leaks is when I don't screw the cap on right. It's easy to carry because of the loop along the top. It's a good size--not too big, not too small--so it can carry a good amount of water without being too heavy. Very durable and can go anywhere with me and survive. Mostly fits into my cup holder in my car (not perfect, but mostly). The bite valve is awesome (so much better than a regular straw!). The colors are fun and different (orange OMG). I've dropped it numerous times and it survived just fine. Dishwater safe, so it's easy to clean.

This water bottle actually encouraged me to drink MORE water, when I was always lacking, so I am more hydrated than ever these last few years. I really could not say enough positive things about this water bottle. Incredibly amazing design and functionality.

Customer Review: Amazing water bottle!
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

I purchased two of these bottles to carry on my hiking backpack and I am incredibly happy that I went with this particular bottle! Quite simply, avoiding the act of unscrewing a cap over and over again throughout the day and tilting pays for itself if you ask me. Call it laziness, but I think it's great! :) The bite valve felt odd at first, sort of took me back to my younger days of holding sippy cups. Once you get over that initial reaction, it really is just like drinking from a straw. I have the liter bottle which is labeled in several places in both ml & oz. Loop on the cap is great for easy carrying & grabbing. Small drip lip under the bite valve. Doesn't leak a drop when flipped upside down. As referenced in some of the other reviews, the straw is about 1/4 - 1/2" short of the base of the bottle. By that point there's only about an oz. left and I'm looking to refill it anyway. The only downside I can think of is that the bottle does not lend itself well for sharing with anyone but a significant other. The action of biting the valve inevitably leaves you tonguing the back of it. I'm a far cry from a germaphobe, but I could see where someone more squeamish about such things might not jump to share their bottle with others.
