Sports reviews of Brunton Echo 7x18 Pocket Scope

Customer Review: It's OK, but for the price, it's really good...
Sport shop rating: 4 Stars

What I was looking for...
*Scope that was a convenient size.
*Scope that had good magnification.
*Scope with close focus 1-1.5 ft.
*Scope that wasn't too expensive...<$50.

What I considered...
*REI 10-30 x 25
-I liked the zoom, but was unsure if I really needed it.
-I wasn't sure if the quality could take advantage of the zoom, or would a good quality fixed magnification be better.
-The reviews were OK.
-Price was at the high end of my range.
-I liked the close focus (a little more than a foot).

*Brunton 10-30 x 21
-I liked the xoom, but some complained about the small objective lens.
-Had all the same concerns as with the REI zoom, except price. This was about 3/4 the price of the REI.
-Doesn't have close focus.

*Brunton 7 x 18
-Got decent reviews, but not spectacular.
-Reviews talked about how convenient it was and that 7x fit most uses.
-I liked the close focus.
-I didn't like the cost being close to the Brunton zoom at most places.

Why I got the Brunton 7 x 18...
*While the scope alone was a little expensive, there's a really nice combo where this is sold with a Gerber Shortcut Multi-Tool which for some reason is very affordable.
*The price of this combo at some places was lower than the Brunton 7 x 18 alone.
*I ended up finding this combo at Fry Electronics for $4.90 (regular price is 12.90)!

I couldn't pass up the opportunity to give this scope a chance at that price. I really don't have any specific use for it. So far, it's best use was viewing an update board without having to walk all the way up to it. It also helped with seeing street signs a block ahead.

What I think of it...
*It's OK.
*The small object lens makes the clear focus in the center a little small. I also have the Pentax DCF LV 9 x 28. It also has some blurriness on the edges, but because of the larger objective lens, there's a larger clear center.
*The clarity is just OK. There's a haziness that I don't have on the Pentax.
*Although the Pentax is only 9x vs this Brunton's 7x, the clarity makes it seem like it has much better magnification.

Bottom Line...
*As a scope, it's OK. But, does seem like it's going to work for most things I need to do with it. On this level, I'd really give it just a 3.
*The price really makes it a 4, or maybe even a 5.

I may still get one of the zooms to see if they bring another level of viewing things, but for now, this scope seems to do the trick.

Customer Review: It's cheap, it's small, it works
Sport shop rating: 4 Stars

On the whole, this is a pretty incredible little instrument.

Having such a long focal range (16 inches to infinity) in such a small package, for such a low price, is quite miraculous. This makes for a brilliant throwaway, super-small scope, for when portability is more important than quality. But it's not for serious viewing.

The 18mm objective doesn't capture much light at all, so the image, especially for distant viewing is quite poor. I compared this with the 7x32 Carson monocular, looking at a pigeon nest on my neighbor's house; with the Brunton I couldn't make out any detail at all, while the Carson (which has its own weaknesses) picked up a very clear image.

For close-focus viewing (i.e., less than 20 feet), it performs much better, but still not better than close-focus monoculars with a larger objective.

I can only recommend this monocular to someone who needs a micro-size spotting scope (either close- and/or distant-focus) that is vanishingly small in size, and wouldn't break the bank if it got lost/damaged. If you are looking for a super-small scope that doesn't suck, then this is for you. If you are looking for a reasonable scope that would benefit from being small, then I'd advise you to continue looking.

Customer Review: For Looking Into My Aquarium
Sport shop rating: 4 Stars

I purchased this Brunton Pocket Scope for the purpose of looking into my micro reef aquarium to see with more detail the tiny creatures inside. It works reasonably well for this purpose, and certainly better than probably all other pocket scopes on the market since it has a near focus of 13 inches. Of course, to maintain focus at such close range, you need to be quite still. There is an aquarium specific product that I suspect works much better, but it costs around $400 (if I remember correctly). Considering it costs less than $25 here at Amazon, the Brunton earns 3.5 to 4 stars.

Customer Review: Small, easy to hold, easy to use, 3 year old can adjust it.
Sport shop rating: 4 Stars

Got this for multiple reasons but I wanted my 3 year old to use it as well. The optics were surprisingly good for the price range, it's very light and the case/strap are nice extras.

1 star reduction for the materials. I understand it's a cheap selling unit but it the case cracked very easily, no noticeable affect on the use of it but it definitely does not hold up well to minor pressure, so careful where you store it if packing.

All in all, I was not expecting the quality to be as high as it is compared to other items of similar nature and price.

Customer Review: Good for the price
Sport shop rating: 4 Stars

Nothing is wrong with this product, it works as advertised although the close up view you'll need more distance. It seems to be made well. For me, this is best for when you see something which is just far enough away you can't comfortably make out what it is, this gives you just enough boost to see it.

Like the classic eye test with the big "E" at the top. When you have made out the last line you can see with your normal vision, this would allow you to clearly see the next line and most of the one after. Something like that.
