About Utility Benches
Despite the competition from trendy new fitness inventions, free-weight lifting continues to be a popular option for home strength training. Free weights offer a special benefit in strength training because they promote quicker strength gains. Free weights also work a larger number of muscles than resistance machines, which tend to focus on isolated muscles.

Specially-designed adjustable pads, grips, and bars help limit and guide movements to minimize the possibility of muscle or joint damage. Plus, from a single utility bench, a vast number of exercises can be performed. Whether it is focusing on the abdomen, arms, chest, or any other muscle group, a utility bench can help you maximize your strength training goals while minimizing your risk of personal injury.

Sports reviews of Bowflex SelectTech Adjustable Bench Series 5.1

Customer Review: Very solid workout bench.
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

If you're looking for a versatile workout bench to do your decline, incline, and flat bench presses, this bench is an excellent choice. I'm very happy with the quality of the construction, and it's as sturdy as most benches I've used in commercial gyms. The back can be adjusted from the decline position for situps/decline bench press to a full upright 90 degrees which is great for doing shoulder presses. The seat also has 2 adjustable positions, flat and decline. I like to workout with free weights most of the time and this bench allows me to do just about any exercise I need that requires a bench. The total assembly time took about an hour total, and was very easy. Although it's pricier than some of the other benches on Amazon, I think it's worth it.

Customer Review: Watch out for FedEx shipping on this item
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

I was on vacation when someone at my company accepted the shipment - I would not have accepted the item from FedEx. The package was very beat-up. Internal components had come through the cardboard in four places. The strapping that was left was loose because it had cut deeply into the cardboard. There were 11 external puncture places in the package and part of the cardboard had been ripped away exposing the interior of the package. Be very wary of FedEx on this unit because it is so heavy and they are so rough.
Now the good news - besides some minor marks on the plastic bench parts, everything else looks great. Assembly went well and the unit is solid.

Customer Review: Everything I thought it was
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

It has great appeal to it and matches my Selecttech weights. Like others have addressed, it has a gap between the seat part and the adjustable back part which I wasn't really expecting but you need it to allot for the 90 degree position of the adjustable back part. For those like me who were concerned about the decline position on the bench being nothing useful, I was quite happy with the degree of decline on it that could be used for decline crunches or decline bench. I just might have to sell my Selecttech dumb bell set for the heavier, newer model Nautilus has designed. After a certain time, you'll be wanting to do the same.

Customer Review: Awesome
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

This bench is great- very sturdy, does what its supposed to. Doesnt feel flimsy in anyway. One piece of advice, when you assemble, the fron two bolts that connect the front of the stand (they are the 3 inch bolts, the longest ones their are only two), once you put them through and screw on the nut, you cant tighten it any further- i thought there was something wrong with it or i needed a ratchet or a different wrench, but that is the way it is supposed to be- it seems loose, but it doesnt matter as long as the bolt is in there (i verified this with bowflex cust service, who was awesome btw....
Very pleased....thanks!

Customer Review: Bowflex Adjustable bench
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

I ordered this to complement my SelectTech dumbells. The bench was relatively easy to put together. I liked the fact the bench has wheels so if I am not using it I can easily put it away in the back room. The construction seems good except for the rubber cushion at the base of the bench. This is where the bar rests when it is in the full decline position. The cushion is already breaking (I have used it 4 times), but if needed could be replaced easily. The cushion would not be needed if you do not use the bench in the full decline position. For the money the bench is a good deal since comparable benches are more expensive.
