About Utility Benches
Despite the competition from trendy new fitness inventions, free-weight lifting continues to be a popular option for home strength training. Free weights offer a special benefit in strength training because they promote quicker strength gains. Free weights also work a larger number of muscles than resistance machines, which tend to focus on isolated muscles.

Specially-designed adjustable pads, grips, and bars help limit and guide movements to minimize the possibility of muscle or joint damage. Plus, from a single utility bench, a vast number of exercises can be performed. Whether it is focusing on the abdomen, arms, chest, or any other muscle group, a utility bench can help you maximize your strength training goals while minimizing your risk of personal injury.

Sports reviews of Bowflex SelectTech Adjustable Bench Series 3.1

Customer Review: Well made, sturdy
Sport shop rating: 4 Stars

If you're looking for a dumbbell bench, this one is just about perfect.

Positives:
1. Decline position, lays perfectly flat, at 45 degrees and straight up. For just about everyone, this is all you're going to need.
2. Strong. Both the frame and the bolts are made to hold a lot of weight without breaking.
3. Stable. I can wrap my arms around the bench at 45 degrees and swing around without the bench moving. (This isn't part of my routine, it's just a way to test the stability.
4. Unlike some others, I found the leg holders for situps to be pretty comfortable. It's not really close to the comfort on a dedicated decline bench, but it works for me better than I thought (I'm 6'1" and about 165).
5. The adjustments to the bench angles are fast and easy, and they stay in place.

Negatives:
1. The plastic upholstery on the seat and bench is not high quality. It will probably stay nice with good care, but I wouldn't expect it to resist a rip or much abuse. I'd also like a little more dense padding.
2. There is a very mild odor from the upholstery that will probably fade with time, but it may bother someone who is very sensitive.

Overall, this is a very nice home bench. You can pay more for higher quality upholstery, but I think most people will be quite satisfied with the price/performance ratio.

Customer Review: Functional, does what it should
Sport shop rating: 4 Stars

Arrived quite fast, great delivery service. I've had to wait longer for books to arrive than this thing! The product itself is very good. Stable, everything fits together correctly (all the screw holes line up, etc...), no leftover pieces. The instructions were clear. A few things kept it from getting five stars though.

1- Some of the screws are too long to secure fully. This is only in one place (where one of the legs joins the support feet). It can be easily fixed by adding in a few extra washers.
2- There are plastic caps which pad the arm where it settles into the brackets of the support. One of these caps constantly falls off. A little glue and it's fine now, but that seems like something they could have done for me.

Overall, very happy with it. It'd be nice if there was a way to expand on it (add supports for a bar, different pieces of equipment to set into the front rather than just the stationary brace, etc...) but I wanted a solid bench and that's what I got. Very sturdy, very strong, seems to be made of high quality materials. I'd definitely buy another one if I had to do it over again. It's nice that you can change the positions without having to stand up. You can shift it into all three while sitting down, so moving between exercises is very fast.

Customer Review: A very solid investment
Sport shop rating: 4 Stars

Assembly was a little tricky because I do not have the most steady hands, but otherwise very straight forward, easy, and quick. Contrary to a few of the reviews I read the width of the bench for your back is more than adequate and the length is good for me (5'7") but I could see it being problematic for those who are not vertically challanged. Definitely sturdy and the leg attachment is very clutch for any decline exercise or if you need lower leg stability during certain presses. I would recommend NOT assembling your bench on carpet...I did that and when I finished my bench did not stand level and wobbling on the tile surface on which I was using it. Lastly, it appeared as though there had been some damage to the cushion material of the bench, but when I received it everything had already been repaired and has caused me no problems.

Customer Review: I should have ordered the 5.1 model
Sport shop rating: 4 Stars

I wasn't trying to break the bank when I decided to order my Selecttech setup. I went cheap on the bench and now wish I had gotten the 5.1 one. This isn't a bad bench, infact it's sturdy and easy to adjust, but the 5.1 offers extra positions, and not just frivolous ones. a 90 degree would be perfect for some of the presses I do. I think aside from the 2 extra inclines you can use with the 5.1 they are identical. I don't need the 2, but it would be nice as it could give me more work out options.

But this is well built and will serve it's purpose, I'm sure you can get better benches for cheaper elsewhere, but these go well with the Selecttech's and the Stand I bought. Overall I'm happy with all 3.

Customer Review: Good all purpose bench
Sport shop rating: 4 Stars

Solid construction and all the holes line up when putting it together. Took me about an hour while watching tv to assemble it. This bench has various positions: Incline; flat; 45 degree; and 90 degree angles. Also, it comes with a leg attachment (that's removable) which comes in handy doing incline crunches and lifting yourself up after a tough set of incline bench presses. The leg attachment tends to feel a bit cramped up front there but only guys with really long legs will be unhappy. Overall, a solid piece of equipment at a good price.
