About Utility Benches
Despite the competition from trendy new fitness inventions, free-weight lifting continues to be a popular option for home strength training. Free weights offer a special benefit in strength training because they promote quicker strength gains. Free weights also work a larger number of muscles than resistance machines, which tend to focus on isolated muscles.

Specially-designed adjustable pads, grips, and bars help limit and guide movements to minimize the possibility of muscle or joint damage. Plus, from a single utility bench, a vast number of exercises can be performed. Whether it is focusing on the abdomen, arms, chest, or any other muscle group, a utility bench can help you maximize your strength training goals while minimizing your risk of personal injury.

Sports reviews of Bowflex SelectTech Adjustable Bench Series 3.1

Customer Review: Well-constructed and great value
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

This is a very nice bench by any standards and as other reviews mention, it was very easy to put together. The instructions are well-written, the diagrams clear and the whole thing is well-engineered and heavy duty construction. The manual says it can hold a 300lb. person plus 300lbs. or weight and I don't doubt that at all. It is also very easy to adjust and doesn't have a lot of little parts. It took me about 50 minutes to assemble it and I went very slowly.

It is true that there are only four positions you can use on this bench, but for most people that is plenty. Also, it is a perfect product to use with a dumbbell workout. If you go this route, I recommend either Pair of Personal PowerBlock Adjustable Dumbbells - 5-45 Pounds in 5 Pound Increments or PowerBlock SportBlock Dumbbell Set. These adjustable dumbbells are rugged, less expensive than other brands and the safest that I know of.

Some other details about the bench... the material is a medium thick vinyl and mine came with a 1 inch tear. I did not consult customer support yet, but I will update this review to reflect my experience of them when I do. I think a better material and padding would improve the product overall, but at this price point I think it's plenty rugged.

If you get this bench, you can eventually get a power rack that can be used with your bench and as a squat/deadlift rack. One that I like is Phys-x Half Rack 10418, but you there are others depending upon your needs.

If you are new (or old) to this type of training, I recommend Build Muscle Lose Fat Look Great: Everything You Need to Know to Transform Your Body and Starting Strength. These are probably the ONLY two books most people will ever need on strength training, building mass, etc. They are BOTH dense with great information systematically laid out. I have other suggestions on my listmania lists, check my profile if you are interested. I also reviewed most of the adjustable dumbells on available on here.

Customer Review: So simple but so efffective!
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

After struggling with an old Weider Olympic style bench, I decided to start looking for something I could use to supplement it since it has a lat tower and some other nice features but was absolutely miserable and dangerous to do free weights with. I wanted something fairly affordable but was willing to pay more for quality and function if I had to. I was extremely pleased to find this bench at this price point.

This is a very simple bench but extremely effective. You can switch the incline/decline positions on it with one hand in a couple seconds in between exercises without even having to set down your weights. This was something that was unheard of on my old Weider bench that used a pin. This allows me to keep my heart rate up during circuits as I am not stopping to mess with the incline of the bench. As far as looks, this thing is sleek. It's extremely stable and sturdy. The rollers on the end are nice as there have been times when I needed to roll it out of the way (not due to size just altering my exercise room layout).

The bench is long so that means my 6ft 1" husband can use this comfortably as well, and the length poses no problems for me being shorter. I find the incline position to be perfect for my free weight exercises and the 90 degree is nice for doing presses if you are looking for back support. The leg holder comes off easily with a pin. The bench is wide but not so wide that it effects my incline fly exercises or others where my arms go out to the side (being a woman I wondered beforehand if this would be a problem, but it is not).

The only complaint I could possibly come up with for this bench is the padding and exterior covering of the bench, and this is a stretch because it poses no problems right now. Compared to my old Weider bench, the cover on this is not as durable/tough and the padding is very soft on this (meaning it squishes down very easily). If they were going to improve this, that would be the only area I could suggest.

I love this bench. Every time I use it, I tell my husband how much I enjoy having it. I would highly recommend this to anyone looking for a good bench to do free weights with.

Customer Review: Great bench, Great Price
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

This bench is really nice. I am not a hardcore lifter or anything like that, I bought a set of the SelectTech Dumbbells from the Bowflex site to go along with the bench. Although it's brand new to me, it seems solid and should work perfectly for the dumbbell workouts I want to do.

It went together easily - it took me about 30-40 minutes with a couple interruptions. I used a magnetic parts tray much like this one:

Advanced Tool Design Model ATD-8760 Stainless Steel Round Magnetic Parts Tray

and found this indispensable for building this will all the bolts and washers. A very helpful item to have if you assemble anything like this.

My only gripe with the assembly involved putting on the seat. I found myself in some strange positions having to turn an allen wrench in a very tight space. It would be helpful if the manufacturer could attach that one piece. The back rest was easy, the seat took a little more contortion work.

Overall, great bench and I am look forward to really using it with my Bowflex dumbbells and stand.

Update: I have been using the bench for the last week and it is fantastic and sturdy. Easy to maneuver and it looks nice. Priced right it's a winner!

Customer Review: Pricy, but Great Value
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

I decided recently to get back in shape. I changed my diet, and began an exercise program. I looked into buying a Bowflex home gym, but decided against it after trying out one in a retail outlet. Instead I chose the Bowflex SelechTech dumbells and this bench. I'm very happy with my choice.

The bench itself if very well built, comparable to what you find in expensive gyms. I chose the 3.1 over the 5.1 because I required an adjustable bench, and the four positions provided with the 3.1 were plenty. No regrets there. Another nice feature of this bench is the foot rest. I use this for sit ups on the bench, and it works very well.

It took me about 45 minutes to assemble. The directions were easy to understand. It's a great combination with the Bowflex SelecTech dumbells, allowing for a very complete home workout. Be careful on price, however, as local retailers often offer these items at a discount. I purchased the 3.1 Bowflex bench at about 65% of the price now displayed on Amazon (with tax, unfortunately, but without the shipping costs). If you decide to buy on Amazon, wait until it's offered at a discount, or Amazon decides to cover shipping costs.

All in all, a great addition to the home gym. Highly recommended.

Customer Review: Well constructed and sturdy bench
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

I absolutely love this bench. Assembly was fairly simple as it comes mostly assembled already. It adjusts from upright to incline, flat, decline. I was specifically looking for a bench that would cover all these positions at the cheapest price and this bench stood out the most. Many other benches in the price range only offered incline and flat and even fewer were able to go completely upright. The construction is also very solid it feels very sturdy. It is rated to hold up a 300lb person lifting 300lbs of weight which should be more than adequate for most people. One thing I noticed however is that the incline angle is quite steep, almost upright. It is right between 90 degrees and 45 degrees. I would have prefered 45 degrees but it is a minor nuisance considering the otherwise great construction of the bench. The gab is quite large between the back and seat part of the bench. This doesn't affect me at all, i'm about 5'9" but some shorter people it might be a concern. Overall a very solid bench and was happy with the purchase I would recommend the bench for both casual and advanced lifters. Also I purchased the Best Fitness BFPR10 Multi Press Rack which I also reviewed and it works fantastically with the bench.
