Sports reviews of Bowflex SelectTech 552 Dumbbells [Discontinued]Customer Review: Outstanding design and function.. Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
I've had a set of SelectTechs (552) for about 18 months now.. I use them just about every second day. I even took one half of the set on a three-month family caravan trip, and was able to do all my exercises easily, even in the confinement of a modest-sized van.
My thoughts:
- They are easy and quick to adjust. Anyone who's wasted time spinning weights off an on will appreciate the convenience. The handles fit fantastically well into my hands - best feeling free weights i've lifted.
- They are discrete; they sit in the corner of my living room, offending no one, and pleasing me with their solid industrial design. The stand holds them at a useful angle, and at a good height (and i'm over 6' 4").
- They have to be adjusted at both ends of each dumbbell, which some people find inconvenient, but the great advantage is you can set a different weight at either end to perfectly match your requirements. For example if i want to move up from front raises at, say, 8kg (they are sold as kg weight in Australia), but don't want to go up a full kilogram (2.2lb), i simply set one end at 9kg and the other at 8kg.. Voila! 8 and a half kg. After 10kg, the increases are 1kg minimum.
- They are a tad bulky, but it has never been an issue for me - consider how many variations on each kind of exercise are possible with free weights.
- As reported by another reviewer, the weights do move very minimally on the handles, but there is absolutely NO WAY this movement is enough to affect the balance of the weights. It's just that you can hear the plastic coated weights moving.. big deal.
- Since the unattached weights stay seated in the base, You do have to remove and return the dumbbells perpendicular to the base, so they slot in easily (the bases, by the way are plastic, but very heavy and solid). If you tend to drag the dumbbells towards you, then you will find the whole base and unattached weights starting to lift as well.. Again, not a big deal.
- I find that the weight adjustment mechanism turns more easily if you apply a very slight pressure down on the adjustment wheel as you change the setting.. if you pull up as you turn the wheel, the mechanism sometimes wont turn.. (this is a very minor issue).
- They are expensive as a one-off hit, but as I said, I've not missed a session in 18 months. I'm stronger, and look better.. I really enjoy using them, and I can do the workout whenever i have time, which occasionally ends up being late at night. No way would I have been so diligent travelling to a gym, and no way could I justify a wall of individual weights (not to mention the ugliness of a wall of weights).
- The base does require assembly.. But it's exactly as boring as any other Ikea-type assembly. The base is heavy duty and rock-solid.
- Some have criticized the plastic and plastic-encased components. I've had no problems with these devices. Where the plastic-encased weights touch each other there are signs of contact, and after several months of use, a tiny amount of talcum-powder-like plastic dust can be seen on the sides of the weights.
- The greatest limitation in my view is that after 21kg (or 54lbs) there is no more weight to add.. Now that the bigger set (1090) has been launched, I guess there is an answer for those who need the big weights.. (I need more than 21kg for shrugs, and one arm dumbbell rows, but for the time being more sets or more reps covers that..).
My desired result is to be stronger, fitter, and to look better - these free weights are the best thing I've come across. They are beautifully designed tools to help me achieve that. If you're more focussed on how long these devices look showroom new, then maybe your interest is less in self-improvement and more in object collecting (oops, sorry for being direct).

I finally broke down and bought these expensive dumbbells, but really the only reason I did was because it was marked down to $308 here on Amazon with free shipping and I belong to Amazon Prime so I got two day shipping free with this, saving me well over a hundred dollars. Buying from Bowflex directly wouldve cost me $399 plus shipping.
They are pretty big but not so big that its a distraction while working out. The length of them prevents doing some exercises but not that many and there are tons of alternatives to work the same muscles.
The grip is the best I have ever seen. It is perfect for me and is a huge leap from the typical dumbbells found at a gym.
It is incredibly easy to change the weights. Just dial it to the weight you want and do the exercise. Its literally that easy. Now the DVD says not to drop the dumbbells because you could damage the inner locking mechanism but I have never dropped a dumbbell. Weights, yes, when I was changing them on the dumbbell but I have never dropped a dumbbell itself. So I am not worried about this at all. If you are used to handling your dumbbells like that, this is not the set for you. Stick to those that are as simple as possible.
The workout dvd is great. I had never done some of these exercises properly and, going to a gym, few people do. And doing them the right way is far better. It is amazing what proper form does. I used to think the bigger the weight the better, no matter what, when in fact the form is the key.
I have no serious complaints about the SelectTech 552 Dumbbells. They are amazing and fit in great with my pushup routine. I had been looking for a dumbbell set like this for a few years now but I was always hesitant to pay so much. Now I wish I had invested in them earlier. They are superb.
Customer Review: Dumbbells are the Kings of Fitness Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
You should always workout with free weights, as they allow you to use the natural free-range of motion, stabilizer muscles, and proper posture.
There is absolutely no reason you should work out on machines unless you are a complete beginner or injured. Machines are great for safety, but not much else.
If you are going to invest in a dumbbell set, get the ones that go to 50 pounds at the minimum. Everything else is just a waste. You will outgrow your old weights as you constantly and consistently work out.
If dumbbell sets are too expensive for you, then consider joining a gym for $20 a month or getting 3 dumbbell weights (10 pounds, 25 pounds, and 50 pounds).
There is no need to even invest in a dumbbell set until your bodyweight exercises and stability exercises become too easy (over 100 push-ups, 20 pull-ups, and 6 minute miles). Until then, use your body weight! It's cheaper, faster, and easier.
If you don't feel the burn after 10 repetitions, you are doing the exercise wrong. In all exercises, it is the eccentric portion of the exercise that builds muscle. Do the exercise in a smooth, controlled fashion with a 3 concentric and 6 eccentric count. Squeeze at the peak of the motion to get that extra pump.
As in all exercises, make sure to keep your wrists straight and check your posture with these seven vital points: feet hips-width apart and pointed straight ahead; knees slightly bent; pelvis at perfect middle, as if you are sitting at a bar stool; stomach tight, but not flexed; chest straight and aligned on top of ribs; shoulders parallel to ribs; and neck straight on top of body
Customer Review: EXCELLENT for Home Gym Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
I bought these as a way to save space in my home workout room. They work great!! I used to belong to a gym for years and am very familiar with other equipment. Would I put these in a gym for everyday meat head use? No. They are no designed to withstand dropping all the time BUT that is why Bowflex designed a stand that works fantastic! The dumbells arre in the same position all the time. No bending to the lower rack or lifting to the upper rack.
I'm not a big fan of Bowflex stuff, but these are the perfect design. The versatility is excellent! Is sampled other selectable dumbells and they were either to bulky (Power Blocks) or a pain in the @#$ to adjust (Weider Power Switch). That's why they are all cheaper in my opinion. Don't believe me? Go to Dick's or wherever and try them all for yourself before buying.
Hold out for a deal to get the stand included for the $399 price or just ask for it like I did and they gave it to me.
I see NO downfalls with these unless you like dropping them on the floor after use as opposed to taking one step forward and placing them on the rack.
Customer Review: Very good Product Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
I Just bought these set of select tech 552 Three weeks ago and to be honest I Love them. I was waiting for the price to drop down and finally i got a good deal on them when they were on sale cheaper then the original price and they are worth it. I had some other set of weights and I hated them because you had to keep on switching to the ones you wanted, and it used to take me time to put the other weights on their place and grab the other ones.. I gave away my other set of 35lbs and decided to buy the Bow flex Select Tech 552 instead.. I know that I won't be able to lift all the weight but at least I have from 5lbs to 52lbs in just one pair of weights.. I haven't had any problem with my set of dumbbells since I been using them pretty much every other day... I am very happy with these product so far at these point.. Regarding the quality is not the best but is not the worst too. I hope that in the future they could make the product a little bit more better and not use too much plastic on them... that's all..
