Sports reviews of Bowflex SelectTech 552 Adjustable Dumbbells (Pair)Customer Review: Worth It Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
I was concerned about the price and reliability of these weights, but after having used them for over a year, I'm glad I bought them. Here's why:
1. They save a lot of space, weight, and money compared to the 15 pairs of dumbbells they replace.
2. They allow quick weight changes for fast, intense workouts.
3. Reliability is fine, although I had trouble with the dumbbells and individual weight disks occasionally getting stuck in their racks at first--especially when I was trying to hurry. My recommendation? Don't throw the weights into their racks or jerk them around, as I did. Make sure you select the weight precisely (the arrow points exactly to the number of pounds desired, and the dial clicks when the weight is selected).
If you don't precisely select a weight, individual weight disks (or the whole dumbbell) may get stuck in the rack. If a dumbbell gets stuck, make sure a weight is precisely selected on the dials and try again. If weight disks get stuck, take all the loose weights off the base and return the handle with the uneven weights back to the base. (There's also a metallic button on the bottom of the handle that releases the weights when pressed.) Select the lowest weight (5 pounds) on the dials and remove the handle from the base. Organize all the weight disks on the base from largest to smallest, inside to outside. Return the handle to the base, select your desired weight, and resume your workout.
In spite of how complicated this may sound, it's not. The whole procedure takes a minute or two at most, and I have only had to do it once--and not at all since I figured out how to avoid it.
Overall, the weights are a huge convenience and well worth the money. If you need to save space, if you need a variety of weights, or if you need to change weights quickly in your workouts, this set is for you.
Customer Review: Spend the money and get these, 100% worth it Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
I'm sure like so many of you, I'm doing P90X and I was torn between buying these are saving a significant amount of money and trying the Walmart 25 lb adjustable dumbbells for roughly 1/3 the cost. I went back and forth before finally biting the bullet and deciding to spend the money on these because you rarely regret buying what you really want as opposed to settling. Boy, was that the right choice.
These dumbbells are absolutely amazing. They are very tight during lifting so there's no clanking or weight shifts, the dials are very easy to adjust, they adjust quickly, and are easy to read. This is crucial for anyone doing P90X or any other video workout because they are generally fast paced. These dumbbells allow you to move seamlessly between exercises.
I decided not to spend the money on the stand and I do not regret that decision at all. $150 seems pretty steep when these dumbbells come with sturdy floor blocks to set the weights back in.
I went to Walmart to try the adjustable ones and they were very loose, they felt poorly made, and if you read the reviews there's apparently a lot of complaints about them falling off. I have no reservations what-so-ever about putting the Bowflex 552's directly over my dome.
The only thing that could present a problem for people with these is that they are indeed massive (check the dimensions). I have wide shoulders so it's not a big deal for me, but people on a smaller frame my have trouble with exercises that involve twisting and turning the weights during the lift. I don't have a problem with it personally, but I could see where it would be an issue for others.
Overall, I can't put in to words how impressed I am with these. Spend the extra money and buy these babies, you'll be glad you did!
Customer Review: Amazing home workout tool Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
I used the 552 dumbells with my P90X workout and I have to say they made life a heck of a lot easier. It couldn't be easier to select the appropriate weight with these things, and with limited time between excersizes, these were golden. The construction is sturdy; not once did I feel any uneasiness in using them. Even moves where the dumbells were lifted quickly and brought back down didn't cause any issues with the locking mechanism of the dumbells. The only slight issue is the overall length of the dumbells. The width is manageable but the length can cause a few issues in maybe 5% of the excersizes performed. An example of this is doing concentration curls with both arms simultaneously. I ended up having to alternate to get around the length of the dumbell. All in all it is quite easy to work around this small issue and it doesn't impact the 5 star rating for me especially considering that having used the block alternative as well, the bowflex ones caused a lot less issues during excersize movements.
I used these without the stand, if you do as well make sure you lift with your legs and not your back. If you have a bad back, or just want to be safe, you may want to go with the stand. (Though theres nothing wrong with a little extra leg work with the proper form ;) ) In summary, if your doing P90X, or any other home workout routine that requires you to switch weights quickly, this is the dumbell for you. Also if your going for P90X know that the 552 version covered the weight I needed for every single excersize (I'm 5'11' and 195 lean muscle). I may have been able to go heavier on a few excersizes but the sheer intensity of this workout would have limited my reps significantly. Hope this helps!
Customer Review: The best dumbbell set money can buy! Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
I have always wanted to buy a dumbbell set for home use and finally on Black Friday I was able to scoop these guys up at a great price from Amazon.
I had gone in-store previously to some stores to test these out and the salesman recommended that I purchase the Power Block's instead because 1) cheaper; 2) you can add weights to those. What I mean by that is say you buy a 50 pound Power Block set and in a year you want to go with more weight...well, you can buy an add-on that will increase your dumbbell set in increments. This is definitely a great feature but I don't see myself going past the 53 pound mark since I just work out to stay healthy and not bulk up. The other problem with the Power Block is that they are not the easiest things to handle grip wise (not the same as a normal dumbbell).
The Bowflex did not have this issue. If you've held a normal dumbbell, you know what to expect from these things. The one weird thing that I didn't actually realize until I started using them is that when you use a small dumbbell (e.g. - 10 pounds), your dumbbell is very small, but if you use a 50 pound dumbbell then it is quite large. These puppies are always the same size (large), and just the plates for the weight change. I got used to this pretty quick.
Pros - You can set this up in almost any room in your house; Cheap Price (in comparison to 15 seperate dumbbells that this set can do); Ease of use in changing weights
Cons - Always a 'large' dumbbell
Overall, if you want to setup a home gym this is your best bet!
Customer Review: For those with managed expectations, this is a winner Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
OK, I've used a lot of knock-offs in various community centers and hotel gyms, along with the SectTech dumbbells. I read a review and agree that the 2009/2010 variant is much more sturdy than previous versions, so be advised.
They are not as rugged or wieldy as octagonal dumbbells for super circuit training or SEAL type workouts, but they are perfect for getting in some sets for definition and general strength.
The main thing is not to abuse them. If you are doing something that would chip the paint on octagonal dumbbells, you are damaging the SelectTech dumbbells. They should be raised and lowered 90 degrees from the floor in a smooth and steady motion. Also, I recommend telling any kids that they are off-limits. Then again, I think children should be kept away from all fitness equipment for safety reasons.
Some people complain about having to turn two dials. These may be the same people who wish a beer would open itself and pour itself into their mouths. I mean, come on, you are about to do a minimum of 3-sets with 10 or more reps. What is the setback from turning two dials - sheesh?!
In a nutshell, if you find yourself capable of tolerating the major inconvenience of turning a dial over moving a magnetic pin, this is the winner over PowerBlocks and other knock-off sliding systems. Of course, the other alternatives to turning the dials are maintaining 110lbs. of dumbbells or changing the plate systems the old fashioned way. Enjoy!
