Sports reviews of Bowflex SelectTech 552 Adjustable Dumbbells (Pair)Customer Review: Great equipment for home workout. Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
First off, I am not some beefy guy who bench presses 400 pounds. I am however, an avid weight lifter and have been for 5 years. There are times at which I don't want to drive to the gym which is why I am slowly accumulating home fitness equipment. I already have a pull-up bar and pushup bars, so logically my next purchase was dumbbells.
I was deciding between these dumbbells and the Power Block ones, and I'm glad I made the decision I did. The BowFlex SelectTech 552s are wonderfully constructed. You can see where your money goes when you pick one up. They have a good thick solid handle and solid weight plates to match. I was afraid that there would be a lot of plastic in the assembly, but I was wrong. Changing a weight takes only a second, and you can go from 5 to 52.5 in a flash. You also have the option of "offsetting" the weights, thus making one side of the dumbbell heavier than the other. This allows you to do even more varying types of exercises (it comes with a DVD and book of a few exercises for each muscle group)
Each dumbbell comes in a "base" which is also sturdy and allows you to lock the dumbbell in place. There is an optional stand you can buy, but unless you have a bad back I wouldn't bother with it. I keep my dumbbells under my bed on a blanket, and just drag the blanket across the floor when I want to use them. The stand does look better visually, but it's not needed.
Perhaps the only flaw is the size of the dumbbells. They're pretty massive length wise. This really isn't a problem though. I just wouldn't be swinging them around in a tight space. You also have to remember that a set of dumbbells ranging from 5 to 55 would take up a TON more space than these puppies.
I have one tip for the up and coming home gym enthusiast. If you're not in the market for a bench, I recommend a fitness ball (also called Swiss balls). The great thing about the ball is you can just deflate it when you're not using it (saves space, not time). However, I plan on getting the BowFlex bench 5.1 because it allows you to be a decline, incline, 180 degree, and 90 degree position.
Overall these dumbbells are a must have if you want to workout at home. More and more often I find myself skipping the gym and hitting the weights at home.
Customer Review: Best Weights For Small Space Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
For awhile I was torn between the PowerBlock and the Bowflex 552. I heard a lot about how Bowflex was not as Durable as Powerblock. It is true that the 552s can not be dropped on the ground or thrown around like regular solid metal dumbbells. They are constructed with serious technology and are not designed to be thrown around.
In an attempt to make the 552s more durable Bowflex improved the them quite a bit by adding metal clips on the weights (instead of plastic ones).
Another Nice Feature is that you can go all the way up to the maximum 52.25 pound weight without picking up the base.
I read a lot of reviews and noticed that the people who had problems with weights breaking had other people using them. These are not for beginners. If you are careful they should last along time.
In my mind the big drawback for the Bowflex 552s is that they are huge. You have to be careful not to clang them together until you get used to them.
The big plus for the powerblock was that they get shorter when you reduce the weight. A very nice feature which almost had me convinced to buy them for awhile. Another Poweblock Plus is that they are cheaper.
On the negative side of the powerblock
they are kind of odd looking. You cant switch hands without putting them down first. After using them for half an hour I noticed that my hand was a little sore where the outer handles rubbed my hand (I think that this could be solved by getting weight lifting gloves that have a wrist guard)
On the $600 90 pound Powerblock it is very easy to line up the little bar to change the weight.
On the $300 50 pound Powerblock it was kind of hard to switch weight quickly, especially when it was on the ground.
The Bowflex is very easy and fast to switch weight, though I am very careful(and slow) to put the weight back in its stand (perhaps I am overly careful)
The Bottom Line
If you have Limited space (and can restrict people from using your weights until they are trained how) These are the best weight you can buy. They are so cool, its like I have a whole Gym in the corner.
Customer Review: Great piece for your home gym Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
After getting tired of waiting for dumbbells at the gym, I decided to purchase an all-in-one dumbbell set. I did months of research and ultimately decided to purchase these Bowflex SelectTech dumbbells. I live in an apartment and don't have the space for a whole set of dumbbells, but didn't want to sacrifice the quality of my workout. Therefore, size and quality were a factor. After reading tons of reviews, I decided to check out the Bowflex model at the nearest Sports Authority. I was very unimpressed as they felt cheap and flimsy. However, after working in retail for years, I know that customers treat store equipment like crap, and that probably explained the quality of the dumbbells on display.
Based on the reviews on many websites, I purchased them. I consider it one of the best purchases I've ever made! I work out a lot and hate going to the gym. I purchased a bench and the Schwinn Recumbent Active 20 Series Exercise Bike and now have a complete home gym. I work out about 4-5 times a week and use these dumbbells every time. I've had them for months and they are still working great. No problems whatsoever. They are of extremely high quality and take up very little space. I have them sitting in the corner of my apartment and my friends and family love them. I've actually had a few friends purchase them after trying them out at my apartment.
Switching weights is extremely easy and makes the workout fly by. If you are looking for an all-in-one solution for dumbbells, I highly recommend the SelectTech dumbbells. Add a bench and some sort of cardio equipment and that's all you really need.
Yes they are expensive, but if you are like me and hate driving to the gym and dealing with the people there, then these dumbbells are well worth it.
PS Make sure you buy the stand also. Having to lower the weights to the ground is incredibly annoying. I got the stand for free when the dumbbells were on sale at Sears. Keep an eye out as these dumbbells are frequently going on sale. The stand is of high quality as well and I never fear that it'll break.
Customer Review: No regrets.... Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
I did quite a bit of research and had narrowed my choice (like most people I think) down to the power blocks and the selectTechs. Really, the only reason I decided on the selectTechs was due to the fact that they are a Bowflex (Nautilus) product with a great warranty. I had purchased their top of the line bowflex several years ago and it's obvious they take pride in their products. As far as the selectTechs, it's amazing how quickly you can change settings to add or subtract weight. I did read several reviews of people complaining they felt 'flimsy' or some such nonsense. There is a very small amount of play between plates that allows you enough room to quickly remove and then reinsert back into it's holder. Pick up any dumbells at the gym with adjustable weights....they bang all over the place. Anyways, I'd guess if Bowflex had made the fit much tighter you would have these same people complaining they couldn't remove from the holder or that they couldn't quickly place them back into it. My feeling is that they did it about as well as they probably could have. They are very sturdy; I could probably drop the things off of my roof without any wear for the worse. Here's something you might find useful as there are many reviews here with basically the same info. in each. I picked up the optional stand for the selectTechs. Now, it is a great stand...looks great...and is very functional. However, looking back I did not really need it. I would recommend that if you have a home gym and all your equipment is in one area then the stand is a great idea (but you don't need it for the adjustable function of the weights to work...it just sits them up about 3ft). I find myself working out in my living room where I have to transport the weights. I don't move the stand there...it's not necessary (too damn big and cumbersome-but looks great!). So, in short, if you are scrimping $ don't but the stand. If you find yourself working out away from where you store your weights...don't buy the stand. If you are loaded and have a home gym...get the stand. Enjoy....
Customer Review: Bought these for Power 90 and P90X Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
I've been pretty sedentary for the last year or so.....I'm 6'0" @ 270lbs with ~35% body fat.
Decided to give P90X a try when I determined that I'd need to cut some fat and improve my overall fitness before going the Xtreme route. Started Power 90 this week and have enjoyed every minute of it; I'm gearing myself up for P90X obviously, and I think of completing Power 90 as my benchmark in readying myself for P90X.
The construction of these dumbells is flawless. Exactly what I expected from Nautilus/Bowflex. I had a Bowflex XTLU in 2004-2010 and unfortunately never got around to using more than a few months; however, in terms of build quality, everything I have purchased from Nautilus/Bowflex is superb.
One thing that surprised me is that the weights are made of a plastic material. I had always assumed that they were metal "discs". Not a con just something that I had assumed.
***
Pros:
-Great build quality.
-Easy to use.
-Easy to understand documentation.
-Sturdy storage base.
-Comfortable grip.
-Cool color scheme.
Cons (If you can call them that):
-Price? Comparable sets are ~$150-100 cheaper.
-Shipping price. See note below.
***
Note: I wasn't going to purchase these due to the high price of shipping. I stumbled upon Prime for students and received free 2nd day delivery for free! Even if I was going to have to pay for Prime, it would have paid for itself with this one purchase. I highly recommend signing up for Prime if you are going to purchase these weights and save yourself some money on shipping. I've made a few more purchases from Amazon just knowing that I can get free 2nd day delivery on Prime eligible items.
I'm really enjoying these Bowflex SelecTech dumbells. If they're in your price range and weight range I would highly recommend them.
