Sports reviews of Bowflex SelectTech 552 / 1090 Dumbbell Stand

Customer Review: Excellent, possibly new instructions?
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

I admit it, my biggest reason for having concern about buying this stand, was the concern of putting it together. Not that I have trouble in general, putting thing together, but because I had a lot of reviews, not just here, but on a few sports store websites as well, that said the instructions are horrible and that this stand is very hard to put together.

I'm not for sure if they are now putting new instructions in with this stand, or if people just don't pay attention when putting something together. For anyone concerned about the stand's assembly, here is what came in the package.

3 different sized bolts, 1 size of flathead bolts/screws, each with the nut attached and 4 stacks of washers that work with any of the bolts.

That is it. What I did, I opened the blister pack of hardware and put each type of bolt together. That took about 1 minute, seeing that you can lay the 3 types of bolts beside each other and tell the difference in the longer ones.

Once I did this, one step uses the biggest bolts, all of them. One step uses the medium sized bolts, all of them and one step uses the smallest bolts, all of them. It is that simple. Even better, the instructions and order of assembly starts with the biggest bolts, then medium, then smallest. There is no way to screw that up since the smaller bolts are not long enough to fit the steps requiring the bigger ones.

The one thing I will note is though the allen key is included, be sure to have a pair of small vice-grips or 7/16 socket/adjustable wrench, to hold the nut in place while tightening the bolt.

The only part I found to be the least bit hard was putting the towel stand in. As we start working against gravity and not having enough hands, on this part. I had no idea there is a towel stand, it is the last step, and requires holding a curved bar under the dumbbell holders, while inserting 4 flat head bolts. Still, after a few times of dropping the bolts, you will get it right.

The stand isn't exactly like that one pictured. The one pictured has more of satin silver color to it, but this one has more of a matte gray color, darker colored. Not a big deal, as it really works nicely for what it is supposed to do.

Total time of assembly 45 minutes, included removing everything from box. Just follow those directions and you won't have a bit of problems. One last note, it does include straps to hold the dumbbells down, so if you buy the dumbbells too, don't worry about cutting the shipping restraints, that look just like the straps in the pictures I've seen with the dumbbells on the stand.

Great product so far.

Customer Review: Definitely worth it
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

I felt like I was taking a little risk buying this thing because it looks like it's got alot of cross-members, struts, wheels, etc. I like simple sturdy fitness equipment, preferably made of heavy-gage steel, and not a complicated contraption. But, I have to say, this thing is sturdy. It doesn't shake or creak or bend under the load when I set my dumbbells down on it, and sometimes after a hard workout I don't always set my dumbbells down as gently as maybe I should.

Some of the other reviews really emphasize how tricky the assembly process is. Because of that, I did something I almost never ever do - follow the instructions. Yeah.. step by step. Boring? Yes. I put a movie on TV to ease the boredom. A couple other things I did that I think helped was I made certain I was using the correct bolts in each step because there are several bolts that are close in length, and I didn't tighten anything until near the end of the assembly process. Basically, I had no trouble putting this thing together. The whole assembly process took me about an hour and a half, but that's because I was watching a movie. I probably doubled or tripled the amount of assembly time by doing that

Of course, the main reason I bought this stand is so I don't have to pick my dumbbells up off the ground and risk back injury. Obviously this stand solves that problem, but it also has a basic V shape (when viewed from the top), and this lets you step in between the dumbbells and pick them up or put them down without bending over. I like that alot better than those straight shelf-style dumbbell stands that you usually see in gyms.

Incidentally, this stand comes with a set of four optional disk-shaped feet that you can put on it instead of the casters shown in the picture. I set mine up with the casters because I don't have alot of space and I needed to roll this thing out to use it, at least in the beginning before I rearranged a few things. The disk-shaped feet might be handy though if you needed to lower the stand a little bit, because I think they're a little shorter than the casters.

Bottom line is I have no problem recommending this stand.

Customer Review: Fairly simple to put together - without the instructions
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

I purchased the stand from another site - as a Factory Refurbished item. I was able to save about $40 that way, but alas, the stand came with NO instructions. I was unable to get a response on obtaining the instructions from Bowflex (in their defense, I grew impatient waiting and I didn't buy it from them). I printed a photo of the stand and have often used the zoom feature here on Amazon's photo to figure out the assembly. It is pretty straight forward - but you do have to be careful which screws you put where. There are several that look the same, but are slightly different in length. In fact, the ONLY problem I had with assembly - I've never used Lock Nuts before and couldn't figure out how you get those dumb things on! But that is a malfunction on my part - not the stands! I will say, aside from not knowing how to use a lock nut, I'm relatively mechanically oriented and find assembly of items very easy. I also enjoy assembling things and found the assembly without instructions to be a nice brain exercise!

The stand itself is sturdy. It defintely helps reduce strain on your lower back - worth the cost if you ask me. I also like the wheels on the bottom so I can move it out of the way from my children. I like the option standard feet though - I can see a time when I would like it to not be moved around. But for now, we have to use the wheels. I also like the straps on the stand. I believe they are to keep the plates of the dumbbells in place so that they don't lift when you are lifting heavier weights. BUT I've discovered they are so simple to remove and re-attach, that I take them up over the dumbbell when not using the weights. This prevents little children from attempting to lift the weights. As I don't have the instructions, not sure if this was intended or recommended, but it works for us. I don't personally use the weights - they are for my husband (who is out of town for a while - thus why I assembled the stand). So I can't comment on the stand during use.

Customer Review: Save your back. Buy these.

I've had a pair of the 1090 dumbbells (90 lbs each) for about 10 months and been lifting them from the floor until now. The price finally dropped here on Amazon so I decided to pull the trigger. Trust me, if you're above 30 like me, and can't recuperate as quickly as an 18 y.o...purchase these....you'll save your back.
These are sturdy, well-made and convenient stands for your Selecttech dumbbells. The shipping carton says 45 lbs (the outer-box is marked Bowflex Stands....so if getting as a gift, have it gift-wrapped). Unlike other reviewers, I had absolutely no problem setting this up....the instructions are straightforward...they are the 'exploding-diagram' type...so maybe I'm visual like that.I recommend not taking all the washers, nuts and bolts out of the packaging....just slice the shrink-wrap to keep the bolts in their position...that way it's easy to differentiate. It comes with an allen-wrench, but you'll need a 9/16 socket for the nut-side...I recommend hand-tightening until it is fully set-up....just to make sure everything is aligned. The casters worked fine....moved it around a couple of times and no problems....but they do seem cheap compared to the rest of the Stand. If they break, I'll just use the pegs.
All in all, it's well worth it to get the stand....I just had to save up long enough after I got the dumbbells themselves.

Customer Review: A must-have if you own the dumbbells
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

I purchased this stand to use with my SelectTech 1090 dumbbells, and it is a perfect complement to the dumbbells.

Assembly of the stand is simple and straightforward [despite other reviews], and can be done relatively quickly (there are only 9 separate components to it). The only tool you'll need to assemble the stand (that isn't included with it) is a 9/16-inch wrench or socket.

The stand comes with a set of rubber feet to hold it firmly in place, but it also comes with a set of castors that you can use instead, if you feel you'll need to roll it from one spot to another.

Once it's assembled, it is solid and firm, even with two 90-pound dumbbells sitting in their racks on it. It holds the dumbbells at a comfortable height, and is much better than bending all the way down to the floor.

It does come with a 30-year warranty, but since there are really no moving parts or anything to wear out, I expect that it will probably last longer than that.
