Sports reviews of Billy Blanks Tae Bo Amped DVD SetCustomer Review: This review is mostly about the AMPED bar Sport shop rating: 4 Stars
I enjoyed the workout DVD's very well, if you can get over (as others have stated) Billy's inability to keep an accurate count on the reps then it is no problem, and at times humorous. For example there are times when he says one last set yet continues 3 or 4 more sets, there is another time where he tells everybody that's enough, but then leads them on another set of jumping jacks that completely looses his group. If you can get over these minor quibbles they will get you sweat flowing.
On to the AMPED bar. Initially I thought it was pretty cool even if it was a little light weight. However, as I got into the workouts I noticed that it began to feel like it was going to come apart, and eventually (after about 2 months of using it) would not remain locked open. Also on one of his exercises he tells you to swing it like a baseball bat, I do not advise doing this routine, or at least 'choke up' on the AMP bar to prevent from damaging it, I do not think it is sturdy enough for this kind of use.
Eventually I decided to make my own "AMPED" bar, and though I do not suggest anybody else do this (since our nation is plagued with lawyers and I do not want to be sued) I went to Home Depot, and bought a 36" threaded (at both ends) steel pipe. I also purchased two caps to place on the threaded ends as a little more weight. This pipe obviously does not telescope in on its self but weighs approximately 5LBS where Billys weighs aprox 3LBS. The use of the threaded pipe with the end caps is that you can in the future fill the inside of your pipe with either sand or I suppose liquid to increase the weight of the bar. I suppose you could even get some lead and melt it into the center of the pipe, once again see my comment above about lawyers, I do not suggest ever using lead which is easily found on another Home Depot shelf (though they will tell you they don't sell it). It is disguised as one of those pipes that sticks out of your roof that the squirrel's continually chew to sharpen their teeth. All said and done the cost of a steel pipe with 2 screw on ends will run you about $15, and I am currently looking for something to wrap the ends of the pipe in to soften where I grip the pipe (i am thinking tennis racket wraps). Note: though you could use the pipe without the ends and lighten it by I would guess 1/2 a lbs, the caps add a little lip that could possibly prevent you from dropping or launching a pipe across your living room or apartment floor.
Now what I did with Billy Bar was collapsed the bar (since I could not figure out how to open it and tighten it where it had become loose) and roll back the foam handels, I then took some electric tape and taped the 2 ends together in the center where they join when collapsed, and rolled the foam back over the center line. This allows me to use the Billy Bar when billy does an exercise, and I switch to my "Jimmy Pipe" TM (just kidding) for the exercises where he opens the Billy Bar.
Once again I cannot stress enough that you do not follow my lead and make your own. I cannot be held responsible for your homemade pipe being launched through your sliding glass window or flat panel television quite simply because I am very poor and have no money.
Customer Review: Great Workout, Terrible Amplifier Bar Sport shop rating: 4 Stars
I absolutely LOVE the workouts, but I HATE the Amplifier Bar.
Love: The workouts are incredible. I have been doing Tae Bo every day for just under 3 weeks now, and I can tell it's really making a difference, especially with my arms, shoulders, and mid-section. I find the DVDs to be very high-energy and the perfect way to wake up in the morning. The time goes very quickly -- some other exercises I've tried feel like they drag on forever, but Tae Bo goes really quickly and before you know, 40 mins have passed.
My only real complaint is that Billy does not do the exercises evenly -- sometimes you'll do 3 reps on your right but only 2 on the left. This doesn't happen all the time, but it does happen occasionally. My solution is to quick grab the remote and pause the DVD while I do the missing rep. Sometimes I don't even need to pause the DVD; I just do the missing rep while he's jogging in place and talking about the next move.
Hate: The Amplifier Bar. If you're like me and just barely over 5ft, it's way too big. I tried to use it a few times, and nearly ended up hitting myself with the thing because it's just too big and too long if you're petite and have short limbs. The other major problem is that it won't lock in 3rd position (open all the way), so mid-way through exercises it'll suddenly become unlocked and start sliding around. I plan on throwing mine in the trash, it's so useless. I bought some small hand-weights and do my exercises with those instead of the Amplifier Bar -- I feel like the work-out is better that way, because I can focus on doing all the moves without having to worry about injuring myself with the stupid bar.
All in all, I do highly recommend these DVDs. I love the work-outs and I love the results. I feel stronger and more energetic than ever. Just be aware that you may need to replace the amplifier bar with some hand-weights, especially if you're petite.
Customer Review: GREAT BUY Sport shop rating: 4 Stars
TaeBo Amped is amazing. It really works your body. What I like about it is that the workout builds up and doesn't allow your body to rest (meant that in a good way). You can do these exercises with or without the amplifier which is good. The amplifier is a bit bothersome though because it doesnt lock in the short position all that well. It can be frustrating at times. I suggest you use a 3lb dumbbell (or 2) instead providing that you have one. It is much easier.
I should also caution you that if you are suggesting buying this product that you workout at your own pace. Billy and the crew always start a new workout in normal pace and when he feels that you know the steps, he moves quicker "amping" it up. I suggest u exercise at your own pace because if you try what they're doing u might hurt something. The start of the DVDs always display that the company is not liable for any injuries that may occur so please make certain you do these moves right. One of the DVDs (not sure which one) does show you how to work the amp so you won't be that lost. I do reccommend this for beginners because it is a great product - u can start at your own speed and get more precise and quicker as you go along. Please I can't caution you enough - please please please work at your own pace and then when u have the moves down right and work at it, you will be able to move as fast as they do.
I give this product a 4star because of the amplifier problem, but besides that it is great. You do feel the burn the next day, but is a good burn. And you will see and feel the difference in your body in 1 week. (Also as some reviewers mentioned, Shellie is extremely annoying in this workout set but if you can get pass that u will have a super workout).
Customer Review: Billy Blanks Tae Bo Amped Sport shop rating: 4 Stars
I have tried tae bo in the past at camp, and loved it. Years later, and many thoughts about doing it again, I saw this in a store and got very excited. I loved it! I personally love the bar more than doing the moves without, but there are times when I feel as if putting the bar down is better for me. Many people have said that their bar has broken shortly after buying it, mine has flown out of my hands and dropped many times and still works! There are some disc's I try to avoid because I just don't like them, but hopefully one day I will do them. I never really followed the program that came with it, I mostly went based on how I was feeling that day. Sometimes if I didn't feel like doing a certain move, and I know that it's not in another DVD, I will do the other. And it's true, the moves can get repetitive, but there are also variations of the move. One thing that is great about this set is that I don't mind letting a friend borrow one disc so that they can experience Tae Bo. I agree that when going fast that you cannot keep the proper form, but I don't reccommend going full blast until you have the move down. With any of his movies, I go my own pace for the duration of "amped up". When I feel as if I can go faster, I do.
I will include how this set worked for my body. I have always been thin, but I was never fit. I could do as many sit ups as I wanted, but I always had a layer of pudge over my belly that wouldn't go away. I did the 30 minute DVD for one month, maybe 6 days a week, and I had a clear 6 pack! Heck yes!
Customer Review: Love Billy Blanks! Sport shop rating: 4 Stars
This is a great set- although the bar is lightweight, it really adds to the workout DVD's. As usual, Billy Blanks is a bit goofy and you want to laugh at him, but most of these DVD's kick your butt! I was sore after all of them but the free one they give you- "Live in L.A"., which was a workout performed in front of a huge group of people. It was quite disorganized, and I felt it was a waste of my time, but the other DVD's make up for it. My only complaint- I had to send this set back twice- once because the bar broke (don't ask me how a 3 pound weighted bar broke- I am not a brute, but it broke) then when they sent me the replacement, the DVD's were damaged and skipped midway through my workouts. Very annoying. Amazon.com gave me a really hard time on the second return, but neither was my fault, and I was very annoyed with them. I was even accused of damaging the discs myself, which was impossible, because I only had them for a couple of days and have a pretty new DVD player. That's besides the point- Billy Blanks is funny but tough, and I will continue to buy his DVD's.
