The Atlas 12 also offers a spring-loaded bonus: each time you put your foot down, you load the spring built into the shoe, thereby returning that energy each time you lift your foot. The result? More distance with less fatigue. Other details include lightweight yet sturdy Duratek decking; a variable ReactiV 7075 aluminum frame that lends a stiffer, more responsive flex to your hikes; and a heel lift bar. The Atlas 12 is so reliable that Outside Magazine selected the 12 Series as its top snowshoe, one of only eight items to win "gear of the year" acclaim out of more than 300 winter products field-tested against the toughest conditions. Atlas 12 snowshoes come in three lengths: 25 inches (for 120- to 200-pound loads), 30 inches (for 150- to 250-pound loads), and 35 inches (for 180- to 300-pound loads). The Atlas story began in 1990, when founder Perry Klebahn--who was looking to snowshoeing to help recover from a motorcycle injury--grew frustrated with contemporary snowshoe designs. Klebahn soon developed his own ideas and created a revolutionary new snowshoe as the theses project for his graduate engineering degree from Stanford University's product design program. Applying for patents on the original Atlas snowshoe, Klebahn was awarded the first patent granted for snowshoes in over 40 years. As development continued, innovations such as the dual crampon design and Spring-Loaded Suspension System became tenets of Atlas snowshoe designs and helped revolutionized the sport.
