In my experience the various clorine dioxide products have very little effect on the taste of drinking water. Iodine and chlorine both make water taste pretty bad, especially iodine. The overwhelming consensus, among those who've really investigated it, is that clorine dioxide is the way to go, for a chemical treatment. Of course one may choose to filter, or use a UV device like the Steripen or Aquastar.

Kills at least 99.99% of bacteria (Klebsiella terrigena) and viruses (Poliovirus and Rotavirus), and 99.99% of cysts (Giardia muris and Cryptosporidium parvum).
